You know, I think that’s not so easy to judge.
Depends on the morality one uses.
I expect that the Western middle class cubicle-plugged-in-life is less terror-filled and pain-filled than the Medieval serf’s… but is it better simply for that reason? (Frankly, to read many posts on Land8lounge you would think that no one knows happiness. And to…[Read more] -

As an LA in a CE firm, I agree. LA grads are much more prepared out of college than BSCE grads, particularly in grading and site layout. There are some hurdles in understanding detailed SWM, but that can quickly be picked up. Most SWM design is done using help from various computer programs anyways. When and if I get some say-so, I will cert…[Read more]

SketchUp 14 years, 11 months agoLooking good as always Daniel! My only complaint is the people, in that I hate them, in that I don’t have them. I’ll send you some of my newer stuff today to see what you think.

I think there is still hope to ameliorate man’s impact on the earth, Rob, but I am not the least interested in cars – ‘personal vehicles’ as you call them – totally unecessary, and bad for the earth..
and did you see the revised population estimates for the end of the century are up by a billion – 10 billion now..
but I disagree that technology…[Read more] -

Perhaps… but 6.9Billion humans (heading quickly to 9Billion) cannot hope to drive around in their amazingly fuel efficient cars and have no energy issues.
In 1974 there were 4Billion of us and only a small fraction owned cars.
Neither technology nor planners are going to get us out of this. Neither have ever solved important social and global issues. -

I agree…you know where we are. That would be nearly impossible for some students.

we did solve the energy crisis – it’s just that industry and corporate america and their political purveyors will not let it happen..Technololgy is not the issue with reducing impact on our warming earth – it is political will..

in 1974, the first year cars had smog pumps and such, I bought a new car that got 41 mpg.
today, they make a hybrid that gets 41 mpg and they think they’ve solved the worlds’ energy crisis!
no progress at all in 37 years…… -

I disagree. I have had my PC for 5 years too and it is still more than capable spec wise, I currently have no need to upgrade or replace anything. Building a PC with a long shelf life is all about the components you put in the thing, which if your a PC user, you can tailor to your needs not accept the pre-packaged MAC trend of the moment a…[Read more]

Anyone doing the latter is probably cynical like me.
Democrats: Hope we’ll do the right thing.Republicans: Pray we’ll do the right thing.Thinkers: Know that neither will.
Unrelated thought for this morning: Espresso is one of man’s great discoveries, it is joined with fire, the wheel, bread and vacuum tubes for guitar amps. -

The hopers make fun of the prayers and the prayers make fun of the hopers. They are in fact the same thing.
They are what you do in order to solidly believe in an outcome without thinking.
You can hope. You can pray. … or you can think. Who is doing the latter?

Internships are great on the one hand, but there is a lot of baggage that comes with it.
The biggest problem many are having right now is not being able to get an internship after graduating. Can you imagine how hard it would be to get an internship after graduating if there were students taking them? Or, can you imagine not being able to…[Read more] -

Andrew, I would love to see all accredited LA programs include a required internship or co-op. As part of my first degree (Associates in Landscape Contracting and Construction), an internship was (and still is) required and this really sets a student up for success. Having progressed to the BSLA degree which I achieved afterward, the owner felt…[Read more]

Yeah, South Jersey craigslist. Of course, sometimes ads get misplaced. And craigslist ads are of dubious value in my experience anyway. So many scam jobs and postings where they’re just fishing to see who’s out there. To broke to afford a real ad yet somehow you’ll be able to pay me a salary?! Yet recently I noticed that the hig…[Read more]
