hey Jon Quakenbuch,
. very funny….but the A&E Board (Architects and Engineers Review Board) here will laugh their ass off here…that would be very funny since they have no sence of humor…they fine people all the time…and yes they do care about the “TITLE” why? because it is a state law…… I know that this is the point you just can’…[Read more] -

The City of Boston has a job posting titled “Landscape Designer (Chief Landscape Architect).” The Commonwealth has title law. Guess you don’t need to be licensed to be the “Chief Landscape Architect” for the Parks Department of a major metropolitan area.

The problem is biggest with those who freelance not those talking to the lamp in their mom’s basement.. Do a web search in your area using “landscape architect” and I think you’ll see it very clearly.
1. When regular people do this, many are getting their first impression of what landscape architecture is …. it is mowing lawns and spreading…[Read more] -

I’m with Jon on this one. As a “kid” who just spent five grueling years in school for my BLA, I object to the idea that I have “no knowledge.” Sure, I have plenty to learn, but my skill sets are above what a firm could expect a landscape designer to do, especially when you consider that anyone– educated or not– can call themselves a l…[Read more]

The Arts & Entertainment board?
“Yes, I would like to report a crime.””Go ahead, sir.””I know of a guy who when asked what he does for a living says he is a landscape architect, but he hasn’t yet passed all the exams.””Is he actively seeking projects as a landscape architect?””No.””Is he promoting his services to be the equivalent of a fully…[Read more] -

I graduated grad school 12 years ago. I’ve moved so often (Virginia, DC, SF and now Boston), have taken some non-traditional jobs (architecture general contractor, landscape curator) and have not made enough money at times, that I have not qualified for, or had the money, to sit for the exams. Last year the company I worked for as an As…[Read more]

That’s exactly what I did. I got a job working in the oil fields as an MWD operator and I couldn’t be happier. $100k salary with no prior experience? Hell yes

Interesting to think of Andrew. Will ruminate on this.
I wonder if we (the profession in the broad sense) are so busy trying to keep our ego intact and prove our worth that we actually hobble our own potential for working relationships. I like to think that landscape architecture is an inclusive profession but know that there is a lot of…[Read more] -

At this point I don’t care what people call us as long as they pay us well. 🙂 Personally, I AM a landscape designer…legally. I don’t know why it is demeaning as you say…just be better then the guy that didn’t get a degree.

Didn’t see this before…we lived in Paonia before we moved up to Moscow. BEAUTIFUL! I looked back at the mountains as we left and thought, “There goes the most beautiful place I will ever have lived”…and that is saying a lot as I lived a summer in Glacier National Park.

Most of the many people with LA degrees that I know who are not licensed either were already in business prior to getting their degrees, or went into business before doing an internship. None seem to be very concerned about it. Some are freelance landscape designers, some are environmental landscape designers, but most are design/build…[Read more]

The really funny thing is that the use of the title is so coveted by some of those entering the profession that they go ahead and use it illegally while they go off chastising those who have earned it for making a big deal out of having a license.
If it is not a big deal why use the title? If it is a big deal, why would you have no sh…[Read more] -

I grew up in AK so it’s no big deal for me. There’s a lot more opportunity up here for the short and medium term (no recession, $100 barrels of oil), which is why I turned down a job in Kona just this week. I miss Hawaii and will get back there someday.
What made you decide to get registered after 8 years? The reason why I’m pursuing it is…[Read more] -

Let me get this straight…you go from Hawaii to Arizona and now live in Alaska?! Alas-freakin-ka? Chup, they should automatically give you a license for doing the unthinkable! Honestly, it would take a $150k/year salary for me to venture into Alaska. Hiking up the summit of Mt McKinley is the only thing I want to see there.
I didn’t take the exam…[Read more] -

I think the hardest thing for us is redefining success and going with the eb and flow of self employment. A couple months ago I was having a hard time since it was winter here in N. Idaho and we don’t have consistent money. We don’t mind the hard work aspect, it is the insecurity of self employment. But we do recognize that our potential is…[Read more]
