Maybe true, but you’re missing the point here. Your job “title” may say Landscape Architect, but does your business card have RLA with a number after your name? And try getting your designs through the permitting process without a stamp. My first job out of school was with a small company and my business card had Project Manager on it. Even though…[Read more]

Well said maui…It’s THE LAW!!!
I didnt make the law I just abide by it.
And Jon Quackenbus, if you come to Tennessee and make false claims, you will be fined.
I will personally report you to the A&E Board…..
We have both a title law and a practice law here, Dood….. -

Yes, no kidding Jason! Read all the designers who want to be called Landscape Architect under the thread “Non LA’s using the title LA”. That is our society today. Did you read the recent article about the retired man in Michigan who won a $2 million dollar lottery? Because of a loophole in the system, he is able to collect welfare and food stamps…[Read more]

I can’t believe this thread is still going strong!! For a question so simple…you either have a license and call yourself a Landscape Architect or you haven’t earned the title yet! End of debate.

Mike is right. There is a major skills gap. In our cities, the schools can’t even get kids to read, with some having more than 60% dropout rates. You need to be able to read to do these jobs.
Where have all the technical highschools gone? Try to find a skilled machinist. Try to find a welder. Try to find competent construction workers.
One of t…[Read more] -

Yep! There are ‘weekend warriors’ but if you work that way for a living you’re a ‘grunt’? Couldn’t agree more with the sentiments expressed here.
In line with something I’ve been thinking about – are we (as a profession) shooting ourselves in the foot by letting apprenticeship training for licensure fall by the wayside? I know some states still al…[Read more] -

I just realized that Alan Ray, RLA is pretty catchy.
In my opinion a junior landscape architect is still a landscape architect, albeit a limited one without the stamp. If it walks like a duck…
Why do I feel this way? Simple: I do the work and I think like a landscape architect. More specifically I have done complex grading exercises, put…[Read more] -

In retrospect, I really should have asked for more information about the technical interview, but it was mentioned during a 15 minute phone interview and he wanted “to quickly go over the time line of the hiring process.”
He mentioned that the technical interview would be done with the design director. Upon scheduling the in person interview, I…[Read more] -

Be sure to review the scale of the drawing and the scale of the components! When I took this section all of the vignettes except one gave templates for required components at the same scale as the base plan. One vignette illustrated the required components at a different scale than the plan. A large majority of those sitting in the exam with m…[Read more]

For those that forget their 11×17 sheet, there is another way to deal with the vellum issue, assuming that you are working on a white or light colored surface( I recommend that everyone bring some sort of board to draft on because the tables at some test centers are not good surfaces to draw on). You can “think outside the book” by taping down…[Read more]

Also, architects say they are architects even if they have not yet become registered. I have never heard someone say that they are a Structure Designer even once, so it is interesting that some in this profession insist on such a distinction.
I think this is thoroughly a non-issue and I find it very funny that there is at this point 17 pages…[Read more] -

I intentionally used it in an improper manner. I like to mess with people using words and language, oft substituting ‘Queen’s English’ spellings and words that sound like they fit. Good pickup, Thomas!

Just a heads-up…
Urbanity is a term used to describe refined or polished conduct. It relates to the behavior of people and has nothing to do with the physical attributes of a city.
urbanity [ɜːˈbænɪtɪ]
n pl -ties1. the quality of being urbane
2. (usually plural) civilities or courtesies -
