This is the typical b.s. you see, now likely in all sectors. It existed before, but now its just beyond ridiculous. There is no recourse for the candidates. It existed before, with work sometimes able to sustain the employee. Now its just a free for all. Companies will cut to the bone and practically lay you off before you get the job, its quite…[Read more]

Paley Park only exists because of the architecture that surrounds it. I think he was also getting to the point that, like Paley. the architecture defines the space of the highline because there is no other verticality on it. The buildings create enclosure. I’m providing some photos fo y’all. I agree that the neighborhood makes it somewhat…[Read more]

If we don’t advocate for ourselves no one will. ASLA is supposed to help us but sometimes someone needs to raise their voice.

Morning Andrew. I didn’t know you had already posted on this!!
I live in the Boston area and the firm posting the position is a well known, high-end, award winning residential firm. I know I will never work for Lombardi now but once I saw the posting I immediately contacted the JobLink administrator and the Executive Committee of the ASLA…[Read more] -

Nah. Life is about navigating through actual troubles and challenges as effortlessly as possible. Some people are unable to do so even remotely, and thus make generalizations and assumptions regarding the character of others, then go on to make broad professional edicts based on their prejudices and insecurities.
I don’t sweat them, actually, b…[Read more] -

I don’t know, Ida, I get a pretty negative feel from the article – ‘relentlessly hip’ is not exactly a postive thing to say, and he seems to me to be saying overall the design depends on the interesting architecture right next to the High Line..Fairly insulting, I think. I don’t believe anyone would say the design of Prospect Park in Brooklyn…[Read more]

Nick, you should have called. We have lots of room. Speaking of small towns that need good design we have to compete against the State of Colorado that offers free community landscape architect service. Restated, a small community will not pay for professional private LA services when they can get it from the State for free! It’s funny you men…[Read more]

Being wise is knowing that you know nothing, being an asswipe is pointing out to others that they know nothing.
I try to fall in the middle somewhere. It’s called a wise-ass. People love us. -

There seems to be a consensus that few outside of the design professions know what a landscape architect is. If that is the case, then the bulk of the people that the false claim is going to be targeted to is design professionals. Why would anyone not see this as a direct devaluation of the license, if that is the case?
There is so much gr…[Read more] -

Classical and modernism can be timeless, but definitely out of style and dated in regard to current ideas.
The article is pretty much right that it sees the problem with the way cities are built and why the High Line affect will not work everywhere. It’s not really a critique on the High Line itself.

Good thread: I will be graduating in a year, and will have to face these issues soon. Thanks for the Landscape Architect in Training (LAIT) title suggestion. I will use that.

I agree with this completely. Your work should be what really matters, your title is just an ego boost

I think the author of this is misguided to say the least. While we may not technically be considered landscape architects, being called a landscape designer is demeaning since we have a college degree. I disagree with the statement that us “kids” out of school have zero knowledge or skills out of college. We clearly have many skills and a lot of…[Read more]

Rick,
just drove through your neck of the woods this weekend on our way to Moab, UT. If you’re a cyclist, runner, or motorhead I highly recommend it. If you’re a cyclist, you’ve probably already hit Fruita just down the road.
Anyway, I can certainly see where you’re coming from, and working for a ‘one man office’ for a while now I co…[Read more] -

I’ve been to the highline a bunch of times. My last trip to NY was to see some iconic LA installations, how they have held up over the year(s), and what they are like in the winter. (BTW, its freakin windy up there in January)

Witold is correct, as usual. Right now it is a tourist attraction…people want to see something new, that is the attraction. You do get some good views of some nice architecture, and that is the context that surrounds it. It could work no where else.
