Great advise from the pulpit not for the trenches. I’ve been doing design work for 40 years and have heard all the “educate the public” crap I can stand. If I have a choice between stamping a 15 shrub 1 tree design or flipping burgers I have no choice but currently being a “Stampman” since I don’t speak Spanish to qualify to flip burgers.

The seed isn’t the only part of the plant that is toxic. The point I was making is that not all plants are appropriate or safe for all locations.

That is a fact. I’ve been on a couple of sites and helped price one out with a contractor once as well. We’ve got one in the CE office currently, as a matter of fact. No knock on him, just the state of the profession when such experience is required for an internship.

What I am saying is that when an individual or entity hires someone to design their landscape for the reason of having a nice landscape (as opposed to being required to do so), they will absolutely always go with whomever removes the most doubt from the outcome of the project. When that is the case, again, WHEN THAT IS THE CASE, they will choose…[Read more]

“If a prospective client can’t understand how spending an additional $15-20,000 on their $2,000,000 property will directly benefit them, perhaps that’s a prospective client you should walk away from.”
Perfect world, not real world. I wish I can move to where I can chose and pick clients. I can’t. Many of our local landscape architects are fin…[Read more] -

Well I guess it is a good think that I have 3 years of work experience for a LA and am currently working for an EE who works on parks, street lighting, among other things.

Lombardi does do exceptional work though… he’s definitely practicing at the very peak of residential design. I’m sure that you’d learn a ton working for him, 5 years of experience or not.

How is our profession going to attract new talent when, after going to school for 5 years and working for another 6, amassing vast technical abilities, project management skills, artistic, creative and spacial visualization talent, you can make a whopping $45k/yr?
You’d be better off going to mechanics school for two years… Chevy mechanics make…[Read more] -

It has been a long time, but the key to it back then was to think practical and ignore the temptation to be an artist. I remember thinking that they seemed to be set up so as to temp the artist in you to to over power the practical – particularly with vehicular and pedestrian conflicts.

This one does pay, but with four or five years of experience and the type of experience required, one would think that it is similar to calling a fourth year football player who has made the Pro Bowl a rookie.

I’m curious to read any advice from thos who have taken section C as well. I agree that the study material provided has been very helpful though it’s difficult to continue practicing once you’ve completed all the vignettes. If anyone has any other material they could share that would be great!

I agree with good design vs. a title/stamp.
However, in any profession, a ‘stamp’ is valid. It maintains liability and accountability…
Also, I’m not a fan of completing with ‘Land Artists’ for a job that entails knowledge of engineering and ecology. Form ought to follow function…which, in my mind, goes back to liability. Landscape A…[Read more] -

Brian J Wethington replied to the topic Question Regarding CLARB Council Record in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years ago
The benefit is really only for licensed LA’s who would like a comprehensive work history and a need for licensure in multiple states. So, until you’ve had two or three jobs, are licensed, and need reciprocity to multiple states, it probably isn’t necessary.
Or, if you want to provide CLARB with yearly financial support beyond licensure…[Read more]
