Tanya your commentary takes this discussion to a place that i think we should not go. When we start looking at numbers and stating that one group is being discriminated because the percentages are not equal, then we potentially start looking at how one group should be encouraged to join a profession and consequently the other group…[Read more]

Read my earlier post between the difference of instittional discrimination and individual discrimination. I clearly stated that I do not think there is very much institutional discrimination any more. But there are individuals who discriminate based on gender, race, etc,…

I think when you start using **##@@@ sort of stuff it is pretty much agressive, Heather..No? It is not assertive, it is just agressive..Who do you want to go up against, some mommy with her soccer -playing daughter, or some industry eco-damaging insider, ready to rape the environment? The soccer mom will rip you heart our to defend her baby, and…[Read more]

I have to say that it is pretty ironic that my response is “aggressive”. What would yours be? I am speaking up for myself and other women. I get along well with other people and love working in a team environment. Forgive me if I don’t have time to go shoot hoops and neither does my husband. I hardly think that makes us less of team players.

removal of discrimation has been done, Andrew – !!! good god, don’t you know anything about being black in the deep south? You are kidding me..
and it is also obvious that, as the typical white male, you don’t really believe discrimination against women exists!!
It is obvious from your posts..
You need to spend a month in black face, walking the…[Read more] -

sorry, heather, you got it completely wrong..In my experience, men will co-operate, they will gossip, form groups, and collaborate, whereas women will stab each other in the back..
Do you see what I am saying? It is the women who are more agressive…The men aren’t!! It is not women’s agression that we need more of! We need more manly co…[Read more] -

I used to work in the south as well, and am also a young, female, LA. I definitely felt like I was in a good ole’ boy club many times over the 7 years I worked down there. I haven’t really gotten into my new job yet up north, so I’m not sure if I will notice a difference or not – I doubt it though. I imagine it is just an issue that comes with b…[Read more]

I don’t have professional experience but will say that I had a couple professors that would give females in studio a B grade when their work was obviously better then the males that received A’s. We noticed it but what were we going to do? I can think of one female classmate in particular that was very engineering minded and blew everyone away in…[Read more]

Then you’ll be all set. It also sounds like you did get your ideas across through another means. That is overcoming the obstacles.

Living Roofs and Walls 15 years, 1 month agoWhat does everyone think about green roofs in the desert? Specifically the Mojave Desert? Given how much energy costs these days, would they not be beneficial? Or would the cost of having to irrigate them (which you would have to in the desert) be worth it?

Case in point- after one meeting, i told my boss about the comments and suggestions i’d made, and how the client (architect) and other team members totally dismissed them. I asked him to send a memo to the team reaffirming the suggestions i’d made. All of a sudden, the client was like ‘yeah, ok, that might be a good idea.’ My coworker Beth said…[Read more]

I have a couple of simple animations on my personal site. I think the home page and portfolio page and also in my folio here–theyre not photoreal, just meant to show the idea.

“So where do you draw the line of dignity? At what point do you say, NO i will not be a doormat and allow myself to be blatantly trampled on all for the sake of the sacred cow, the ever-coveted ‘at least you have a job’? The question is not whether or not discrimination exists – and it exists everywhere to one degree or another. The question is what is the next course of action.
Discrimination is usually subtle and hard to decipher. That makes it very difficult to prove. It also is very easy to believe that any bump in the road is attributable to discrimination…[Read more] -

Yeah, doing punch lists on a new construction job is always interesting. In the five years i’ve been working, only ONCE have i encountered another female on site. Sometimes the superintendent listens to me and takes my comments seriously and responds, sometimes they don’t. I’ve never experienced any blatantly obvious discrimination- no one has…[Read more]
