Urban design is not my niche in landscape architecture, but your discussion subject is great. I’m in an area that keeps big design projects out through regulation, so most projects are designed from the building out and it makes sense that they are begun by architects. I’ve also come to realize that in such an environment the building’s interior,…[Read more]

I think urban design is complicated enough that it should probably be done by teams composed of landscape architects, architects, planners, engineers, etc. Ultimately, we need to let go of the idea that urban design “belongs” to one profession and be willing to work together.
I think we LA’s could help solve many urban issues that architects are u…[Read more] -

Or an IT manager, it takes constant updating (server restarts) and there are quite a few flaws that you have to get technical assitance to perform, very time consuming. Plus, it is a heavy program, meaning it is not very efficient and hogs resources. Studiometry looks like a nice suite of simpler, more efficent software.

Thanks for looking into this. We are testing Studiometry on our server and need to have 10 inputting time data, so it is set up for multiple users contributing information. There are some components that seem superfluous and busy as well as a few extra input strokes to get daily time logged in but we are looking for short-cuts.
Regarding your…[Read more] -

I just got news from a colleague using Deltek that told me that it would help to be an account before using the software. Thanks for your insight.

Studiometry looks pretty legit. It seems to cover all the bases in a clear, intuitive format. My only question would be, can multiple people contribute information to a project? It seems like a good tool for a project manager but I wonder how it would interact with the rest of the team. I.E. Can you assign tasks and have people check them off when…[Read more]

There are a few systems out there. I’m not familiar with this one, but it looks quite good. A bit on the pricey side, but I guess compared to what else is out there, not too bad (and many other systems are subscription for upgrades). Stay away from Deltek…it is an unweildy beast!

Many Practice Acts that I have read have exemptions that you can drive a truck through (One ton dumps and little Toyotas) that make Claudia’s question a very valid one.
New Hampshire:
Exempt persons: …
gardener, landscape gardener,
landscape designer, landscape contractor, …..
Rhode Island:
Exempt…. Landscape gardeners, or nursery wor…[Read more] -

You’re right Steve. I read your post wrong. It should be obvious that if there is a Practice Act a stamp is required. Now all States should have a Practice Act. It protects the Landscape Architects. Glad to see that there are only 5 states left until all 50 have Practice Acts. (maybe 4, Illinois is in the process of requiring the Practice Act).

Jeff, I hate to do this to you man, but think before you speak or type, I said that all states that have a practice act require a stamp, not that all states have a practice act. Big differance.

In NJ, all rules are dictated by the Site Plan Law and also by specefic municipal ordinances. Lately, alot of municipalities require that landscape plans for public work only be designed by a licensed landscape architect, “or an individual the board approves as equal”. In 2009, our Title Act became a Practice Act, but the tasks that are allowed in…[Read more]

Steve, not All states have a practice act. Washington just passed a law for a Practice Act, but Illinois, Maine, Mass. and Wisconsin are still only under a Title Act, so any landscape designer can practice. And then there is Vermont, that has neither.

Steve Roberts replied to the topic Does your community require the stamp? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 2 months ago
All states that have a practice act require a stamp, and all work must be stamped. Here is a link to the ASLA website where they explain all of this. http://asla.org/StateGovtAffairsLicensure.aspx. I am not sure why you would ask this, you must not be a Landscape Architect, otherwise you should know this.

Good points, all. Amidst the competitiveness and the turnover, is info being as safely guarded within the studio as much as it is between them? In our studio we’ve begun to use an intranet-based wiki to share both open and sensitive information. It’s great because, among other things, it’s only accessible in the office. This way, institutional…[Read more]
