Hey hey, its Russell again. Aloha my fellow Arizonian! You ever run or hike up Camelback mountain? I loved that workout while I lived in Scottsdale! Did they expand the parking lot yet.
Boy-ohh-boy, what’s with some of you guys? Very sensitive attitudes in today’s economy. I understand. You try to give out a friendly advice and get hammered!…[Read more] -

Contrary…I was responding to YOU and the “timing the market” comment. I gave her advice on career choices (look further down) and she’s not unemployed. Boy-ohh-boy, you try to help some folks out and this is what you get.
I’m debating on whether or not to keep my comment posted. On Fool.com, I strongly advised people to purchase stocks back in…[Read more] -

Wow an employer asked you if you would shave your beard if offered the job? It sounds like they may have had their priorities mixed up. However, by making light of the subject, you yourself have some idea that it might be a point of contention for some employers. If you have an inkling that it might be frowned upon, then it makes sense to el…[Read more]

Check this out… I haven’t had a chance to play around with it yet but it sounds pretty robust, uses AutoCAD commands, the dwg format and works on both Mac and PC. Oh, and it’s FREE! Brought to you by the good people at Dassault Systems (SolidWorks)

Jonathan, if you’re looking for solutions that are cheaper than $1000, then BricsCAD comes to mind. My experience with using older versions of AutoCAD brings at least two challenges…lack of Autodesk support and the pain of having your collaborating design team members save back to the version in which you are working. Though on the surface this…[Read more]

I agree. Get ant relevant experience. Use and develop any skills you have or want to have.
I just applied for a job with a public policy consultant the other day. It would be awesome! And I could use my writing degree again… -

I’m in a civil office and it is a very secure position to be in this economy. I do a liitle bit of survey design/drafting, a little bit of landscape design, a little bit of environmental restoration, a lot of cicil site plans, …. what part of that is not landscape architecture?

Thank you for stating it so clearly Matt. I couldn’t have said it better myself. I have recently put the word out that our firm is looking to fill an entry level position, and although it would be working with the civil engineers in our firm it is a foot in the door. What do I get? No response.

There are non-photo blue pencils (they clearly say that on them). I believe col-erase produces them. There are also non-print purple pencils. These are designed to not print using a diazo process (now thankfully obsolescent). They aren’t the same. Non-photo blue is made to not reproduce with a xerographic process (copy machine), although if you…[Read more]

Hello,
Gulp. Here is what I think. If you are taking loans out to go to school but you can go back to your old job. I would definitely go back to your old job. If you can pay your way through school slowly…do that. There is no rush. My husband graduated in 2008 and myself in 2009…both with the same degrees. No jobs here…no wait, we are self…[Read more] -

This is my 12th year in the profession and there’s been plenty of highs and lows! From what I’ve seen in the U.S. economy as a whole, recessions come in cycles every 10 to 15 years. The economy will pick up again before you graduate in 2 years and then, it will have another recession in a decade or less. As a student, you have to really ask…[Read more]

I think having a year or two left in school is a good position to be in, rather than graduating this spring. The prospects of new work increases almost weekly, and the phone is beginning to ring more than it has in over 12 months. I graduated in ’95, and I thought that was a hard time to find an entry-level position. I started in a civil en…[Read more]

I guess we all get into things that appeal to us. Money becomes a factor when the work stops. Otherwise, we would all go after an MBA degree. (Which has in fact has occurred, to an effect). This particular down economy has caused almost everybody to question their chosen field, and has magnified the instability of landscape architecture. It just…[Read more]
