I can handle ups and downs in a market… I’m super concerned about not being able to get in if the time between when I finish school and when there is demand is too long. Will I fall through the cracks or will I be able to get a job eventually?

I’m not sure that making money is the goal (I expected a 2/3 salary cut), but being able to get a job is on my list of must-haves for a new career. Four years of school is a big commitment and an investment of time and money. To not have any job prospects at the end of that four years is pretty sucky, especially since I need a job in order to get…[Read more]

“Really want” is definitely hard to define. I feel like Landscape Architecture is the thing I was meant to do and I just figured it out a little later than others. I left a lucrative career as an ecommerce exec to go back to school to do this. I want to do this, but not if it means forever struggling financially and being frustrated about not…[Read more]

If you want to make money and have job security don’t bother with Landscape Architecture as a career.
Electrical Engineers make a ton of cash and are in heavy demand. We all need energy and where it comes from (generation) and where it goes (Transmission and distribution) is a huge market. Utility companies hold billions of dollars and will n…[Read more] -

No one can predict next month, let alone two years from now. If you switch to another degree course, will you be any better at “timing the market” two years from then?
The only real question: What does “really want” mean? -

Hard to say… I graduated in 08′ at the top of my class but I’ve been unemployed for basically 2 of the last 3 years. I still value my education. It was a transformative experience that literally changed the way I view the world and gave me the skills to express my ideas, whether it be a landscape design or a new invention. I truly believe that a…[Read more]

I can only tell you, after being in the field for sixteen years now, that Landscape Architecture is 100% market driven, from residential design to large developer work. Unless you work for a municipality, there MAY be some more job all security. As with most things, as great as LA is, this is the curse that dogs the profession. This recession so…[Read more]

And (to add to your evidence) while it is drought tolerant in the right landscape, it will not be on 6″ of roof mix.

They change their business model to adjust to regulation for one. Regulation does need to happen to one degree or another and you can definitely be involved in that either by career choice or by being an active citizen.
Another reason to change a business model is when the success stops happening, such as right now. This is a time when some lay…[Read more] -

That’s great feedback – i’ll be sure to add some more exteriors to our gallery. We’ve had some great images produced by Daniel Tal and other landscape architects which we should definitely make more of. I’m guessing user stories that you could send directly to your superiors would also help.

Most all render plug-ins for sketchup highlight interiors an overwhelming majority of time, I would like to see some landscapes rendered with it, especially in the gallery page. For those of us who would be the ones pitching the software to our supereriors, it would be nice to see a finishined product that makes sense to landscape architects in…[Read more]

Those are very good points and things that I have not thought of before. It will be some things that I will have to think about and mull over for a while, but again I really appreciate the input.
What yous points do help me to see though is to how sprawl can be so ramped and spreads so quickly, especially here in PHX. . Most of the dev…[Read more] -

Have you downloaded Shaderlight? I think you’ll find it pretty much does what you’re after right now!

Reflection, shadow, texture and lighting are all important in a renderer and being able to adjust those quite easily would be great. Some renderers have their own components which will emit light and reflectivity and the renderer will notice these preset characteristics, but it would be nice to select a material or object you have in your model and…[Read more]

I totally agree with you, I didn’t think it sounded like a good idea at all for the situation. You’ve confirmed my thoughts. Thanks!

Melinda W. Polites replied to the topic Is there a market for the work I've been doing??? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 2 months ago
Thanks, really. It is very time intensive – not too mention what it has done to my hands- because I cut and drill and grout everything myself but the more I do, the smarter I get. There is a lot of passion in it. My intent has been to create a catalog of work that would eventually be reproduced by others once I could get enough interest. So wh…[Read more]

I generally don’t care for western mosaic (they’ve got some amazing stuff in the middle east) but I really dig your work. It must be very time intensive though, which might make it difficult to be profitable. Have you done the math? How much could you sell them for vs how much time/materials does it take? If you can get connected with the right…[Read more]

The biggest road block is that you are trying to sell to bigger developers who have actually built and sold quite a bit and have learned their own ideas of marketability/profitability through their own experience and profit/loss. Would it seem logical that they would put that aside and trust in the vision of people who have not actually done…[Read more]
