Make the contact, stay in touch often, and let him make the move on the job front. If he needs help he’ll ask you if you are interested. If you ask and he is not not ready, he’ll say no – then things will be awkward as far as you staying in touch. He is going to know that you want a job, so why put him on the spot?

I like blunt. If he has “a very small firm”, he will appreciate it. If you haven’t talked to him in 3 years, he will be annoyed at a coy approach.

Very cool. It’s kind of like peeking behind Oz’s curtain when you build it in 3D. In the same vein, this guy models his favorite architecture in SketchUp and does some amazing renderings Solos Place

Looks pretty promising… and very inexpensive.
On a side note since this is sketchup related, check out this guys sketchup models of famous works of art (And how he makes sense of MC Escher’s waterfall… insane):

Before you involve an engineer, check to see if you are licensed to do the stormwater calcs., sizing detention and conveyance. In Idaho we are licensed to preform these services and we were trained to perform these services at UI. Don’t give fees to other professionals if you don’t have to!

Not to shoot holes in your question, but these are things you need to figure out in order to design your swale:
1. It’s a 100 year flood, not a 100 year storm (that was Point Break)
2. By “retention” I believe you mean “detention”. Retention areas hold onto water. Detention detains a given amount of water for a given period. I spent a fair amount…[Read more] -

My hundred year storm and your hundred year storm are most likely a bit different. You’ll also find that different soils perc’at different rates.

A lot of firms send out their high end modeling/rendering to asain firms who can create high quality photo…[Read more]

I use google sketchup because I work alone and because it is so easy, Im able to present various options in a very short time, I think the other programs shuch as revit shoul tone it down a little so they could be more used.

SketchUp 15 years, 2 months agoHey Dave. One way would be to map appropriate landform/vegetation/sky images to a curved background similar to these at SCF. You could also do a search for sky dome at SCF or in the 3D Warehouse. If you intend to fly right up to the edge of the TIN, you might also need to extend the surface out a ways to meet at the image. By matching the…[Read more]

SketchUp 15 years, 2 months agoI am working on an animated fly-through of an airport. I have a tin of the actual terrain and have added my 3D model of the airport to the tin. My question for the group is, what do I do to eliminate “the earth is flat” look of my animation. My terrain tin extends in a two mile radius from the airport. I thought about putting a sky/horizon image…[Read more]

In Juneau, Alaska we recently designed a heated pedestrian plaza in front of a transit center with landscaping. My research indicated that you need coordination with the mechanical/electrical to understand the heat requirements/output based on degree cooling days. In areas that the temperature only needs to be raised a few degrees to get melting,…[Read more]

Jessica,
Do you mind sharing survey results? My company is A/E firm and architects are already using BIM. Our landscape architecture studio is considering going BIM route but not sure what industry is doing. It will be very helpful if you can share the survey results with me.
Thank you.

I’ve fallen into being the default 3D guy for my small office and was considering making the leap from SketchUp into one if the more intense programs like 3ds Max or Rhino. But the deeper I delve into SketchUp the deeper the rabbit hole goes and I’ve found that its capabilities far exceed my talent. With all of the awesome plug-ins being developed…[Read more]
