I can’t believe you didn’t mention them as a fashion item. I can just see one around Angelie Jolie’s neck as she does the red carpet..Might be good for your skin too, another selling point..
hee hee. I just remembered what Carol and Leslie from Andropoggon called the tree in a mulch island thing – they loved to compare the landscape to the…[Read more] -

Not a bad idea… at $35 a pop, you can probably get them wholesale for $17.50. If you can move all 24 in a week that’s $420. Not bad in these times…
And as an added bonus, since you’re going door to door anyway, if they don’t need mulch rings you can always sell them as door mats. “Yes, ma’am, I understand that you don’t need mulch rings at…[Read more] -

Android is still a relatively young platform for productivity apps. Though it has promise it has a long way to go before catching up with more mature platforms such as Windows Mobile. Though I scratch my head sometimes at Microsoft’s strategies. Most all of the productivity apps for Windows Mobile are for WM 6.5 and lower. WM 7 is a com…[Read more]

Sounds like a fluffer program to me. Farmers have been stepping off fields for years and this is only an appoximation at best. When building Retaining Walls and Patios, I use a Leica Robotic Total Station survey instrument. It is the only way to precisely measure (for quotation purposes) and then build the structure using the stake out f…[Read more]

Landscape architecture becomes fundamentally important as soon as you recognize the value of good design. There is no other profession trained to see as we see, so their ideas will fall short of what is possible, what is optimal for any site. We alone are trained to take a wider view that bridges form and function. The professionals trained in…[Read more]

“What is going on in the green energy world that landscape architects ARE working on?”
Hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands are targeted for the development of solar and wind farms. LAs are being hired to do the visual resource management and some mitigation work that is related as part of the permitting process. VRM is required for t…[Read more] -

I hate to say it but those synthetic mulch rings have the potential to be hugely popular and profitable… just think of all the plastic landscapes you could create in AZ and SoCal with synthetic mulch rings, synthetic turf and maybe some nice synthetic rocks / boulders.
Come to think of it, rubber boulders / rocks would be pretty cool. Like…[Read more] -

There is a clear difference between a “mulch ring” and a “mulch volcanoe”. I don’t think anyone defends mulching against a trunk. The article is on mulch rings in general. There is a time and a place for a properly maintained mulch area around a tree that is surrounded by turf.
In fact there are times when someone may choose the wimsy of a goofy…[Read more] -

I’m in design/build. I just went to a Techo-bloc seminar and they have an app for iphones and ipod touch that allows you to calculate areas. You set your pace distance, hold the phone flat and pace the perimeter of the area for the proposed patio and/or walls. You can then input which of their products you want to use and it will give you th…[Read more]

I spent a number of years in intensive pro-bono work in little communities on the reforestation of the urban landscape. Unbelievable what was out there! One of the illustrations we still call the volcano method of mulching. Lessons on how a tree grows, canopy, trunk, buttress flare, root system……….goes a long way. But nothing like the…[Read more]

There seems to be a lot of opportunity for LA’s to do work associated with energy. Visual impact studies, site planning, remediation. Very specialized (gov’t and big industry contacts required) but it would be a good thing to be involved in.

Agreed! If landscape architecture is a blend of art and science then we should embrace the mad scientist / artist approach to work. It doesn’t always start at 8am and sometimes inspiration strikes at 2am.
Traditional 9 to 5ers have a hard time wrapping their head around “off” hours… as if it’s not really work… work to them happens between 9…[Read more] -

Yeah, there are gems all over the mid-west. Real American towns full of real American people.
I don’t talk about the good ones out west, because as soon as you talk about them, people go there and ruin it… small towns are great because they are small. -

Depends on your perspective i suppose. There are some good places to congregate, there are some decent restaurants (and Dino!), and they have the best regional farmers market in Ny, bar none.

It has nothing to do with what you want to do and everything to do with who a client hires. They tend to move from who they need first toward who can enhance the project if and when they think the people already working for them are failing to do that.
More often than not the most important thing is the building and they start with an…[Read more] - Load More
