Will do. Just found this tree app from Audubon – little pricey but no doubt worth it! Think I’ll see how I like the two Mark suggested below (just downloaded) before coughing up 10 bucks though.

I agree that university programs should not spend any time learning how to handle such specialized situations as wind turbine placement, since these matters are indeed the purview of other professions. It doesn’t mean that a landscape architect can’t be involved in these projects, just that it’s not common enough to occupy time in school. I think…[Read more]

I would not say that technical issues are not a concern of ours. I’m simply pointing out that projects move from required professional toward beneficial professionals and that in many cases the required professionals have completed much of the design that the beneficial professionals would work on. The situation seldom works in reverse and if an…[Read more]

I agree that landscape architects are separate profession altogether from wind turbine engineer. To me it is the technology that impacts design that could be better explored in our universities. Soils, phytoremediation, low impact design methods are all examples I see as being directly related to our profession and to properly functioning design.…[Read more]

Everything starts from where people go first to get whatever type of work they need done designed. Any time that we have expectations to be a part of something we need to be realistic as to not only what we can do, but where in the process we actually fit in from the client’s perspective. I believe that it is unrealistic to expect anyone to…[Read more]

I am writing from the East coast, so the short answer to your question is No, I don’t have any specific plant recommendations to offer.
I did work on a green roof project growing plants in a greenhouse and then placing them on a local roof, and can second the sedum/delosperma suggestion for tolerant succulents. These genus are huge, so t…[Read more] -

I agree. If we want to effectively compete with technical professions in the technical realm, we need better coverage of this material in school. Everything seems to have some aspect that requires some technical proficiency for the design to be a success, from materials to soils. I know that school is generally supposed to be an introduction to…[Read more]

In the Bay Area (will presume you mean outside…) – well, I like airplants. And also sedum(varieties) and iceplant (varieties). also Ficus pumilla repens to grow directly on walls in deep shade. I have used these plants from Hillsborough up to Coastal Sonoma, in Marin, SF (the sunset) and in Berkeley down by the water….

I bet it looks quite different in winter…and I agree with Sherman Runions comment – be careful especially in tender habitats – the plant is a maintenance issue…it is aggressive and could destroy structures too – but I have seen cool things done with it in urban environments in Lausanne Switzerland…quite succesfully…

I love this site–where else can you get so passionate about mulch?!
Concerning tree rings, I think we are talking about a temorary condition (first few years) and a long term one. A mulched tree ring may be necessary on a recently planted tree so you don’t come out and find the new tree listing at a 45 degree angle strangly in the direction of…[Read more] -

I wouldn’t call their project bio-filtration, but constructed wetlands. http://water.epa.gov/type/wetlands/upload/design.pdf or http://www.cabmphandbooks.com/Documents/Development/TC-21.pdf It seems like bio-filtration is commonly used to describe bacterial water treatment systems, either aerobic or anaerobic and are usually used in the context o…[Read more]
