If scoring the test is so cut and dry and only perfect tests pass, then how has anyone successfully overturned a failing grade? A coworker of mine knew he didn’t have enough pipe coverage and he still passed. Sooooo….What’s up with that?

As a student, I see this everyday I’m in studio. Two of our professors have awesome hand graphics, and the ability to draw something beautiful and expressive on the spot is really impressive. Other faculty are much more reliant on technology. As a studio, I think we have a respect for the old school, but we tend to want to integrate technology…[Read more]

I believe they can legally not pay you if you are being compensated with academic credit. It can provide a student with a means to learn the practice of a profession in an office environment. I find it rather distasteful but so long as the work is not something billed out to a client, it can make some sense. The way I see it, an unpaid public…[Read more]

Do take a close look at what you want to do and if LAs are in that field. I like what I do, the pay is low and work hours can be long but being paid to do what I want is nice. It’s not a cushy field by any measure, especially the first few years but most of my friends from grad school are enjoying their work.
Talk to the faculty at each about…[Read more]

I’m sure there are paid internships… I had one during spring semester Junior year. It paid OK and I was a “Landscape Architecture Intern”, not “Staff Level Landscape Architect”. Most summer internships also have an agreed upon termination date, when the student goes back to school. I know that there are also schools where you take a semester off…[Read more]

As I understand it both VA and CT will allow you to take the LARE w/o experience, but the state board will not issue a license until your CLARB certification is complete and you have the necessary experience as required by the board.
Compared to the IDP process for architecture, the LA license procedure is, simple – they require you log a…[Read more]

Hey Jeff, do yourself a favor and don’t go into landscape architecture. I just graduated from the U of M LA program six months ago and I’m sure that most of my classmates and I have have not found a decent job in landscape architecture! There are no jobs in this field period! Zero, nothing. The minuscule number of places that are hiring are…[Read more]

The obvious point to take away from this most recent thread is that CLARB expects you to follow their instructions and standards. Generally knowing how to grade or direct drainage does not prove in an objective way that you can execute grading and drainage plans with sufficient skill for them to be fully functional. The 2% minimum standard for…[Read more]

A lot of people don’t understand what an “internship” is. An “internship” is when you pay your tuition for the semester while working for someone for free or close to it. I don’t know why anyone would want their school to require an “internship” in order to graduate.
Why would you want the university to require it of you? Not only are you working…[Read more]

You are absolutely right that the fees are very high. I’d hate to see what they would charge for a beer between exams.

Good point Heather. Why doesn’t this happen more?
I will say my niece is in her 4th year of industrial engineering (GA Tech), and she has 4 awesome internships under her belt.
Any academic types want to weigh in?

Hi Ryan,
Couldn’t have said it better myself only I am one of those 52 year olds and I still want to get my designs into CAD as fast as possible!

AR,
Have you thought of starting your own design/build? I am not sure what state you live in and how the economy is. We started out with fliers around town when reality struck…and have actually been able to survive!

Thinking more about this throughout the day. I think the thing that bothers me is that our education does not require an internship (at least our our uni) but licensing essentially requires one. For recent graduates…there aren’t even free internships available. If this practical experience is so worth it why don’t universities require…[Read more]

Everyone has put out very valid points here but seem to be on one side of the fence or the other…
As a 28 year old professional I find myself in some sort of an in between role at the firm I work at… Older designers are retiring with the capability of hand drawing perspectives with very little time. They’ve had years and years of practice and…[Read more]

It is the number on selling Autocad clone. all the comands are identical to Autocad commands… if you know AutoCAD you know BricsCAD you can run Autolisp programs for autocad inside Bricscad. Save in .dwg file format. Why do you think AutoDesk is talking up Civil3D and Revit? They would love to get you to move into those programs because they…[Read more]

Thomas,
Thank you for the comment on the website. I have not updated it since January so it is lacking my newest work and sadly has a few bugs to be worked on. Will be rebuilding the whole thing shortly. As far as your comment on 10-12 hours in Auto CAD is that in reference to working for a firm? or at what I am currently doing? Because believe…[Read more]
