Zach Watson replied to the topic Section D? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 6 months ago
Ok thanks for the clarification Jordan, we have talked a little bit about the LARE but not in great detail so I got that one mixed up. 🙂 Now that I know what Section D is about I can totally understand why people struggle with it so much. I mean when it is a national test and each region has individual parameters they have to work within, and…[Read more]

Hi Boilerplater
Thanks for the book recomendation. That looks like one for the christmas list (counting down the days!).
I would agree that there is sufficient precipitation in most parts, but how much of that is actually available to the tree?. Compared to uncompacted loamy soil, the water infiltration rate through asphalt is zero, paving stones…[Read more]

Henry, thank you for taking the time to look! I really appreciate it.
Have you by chance had any experience with the modular tray system roofs? If so, do you have any thoughts on them versus a ‘standard’ green roof?

It looks like you need help on the “materials and methods of construction” portion. It would not hurt to talk to some installers and see if they can help give you some real world information on how things get built.
Have you taken the trip to Lowes/Home Depot/Menards to touch look at and figure out what pieces work best for what. I got a free book…[Read more] -

Are you talking about section E the grading section or are you talking about section D the multiple choice Design-construction documentation section?
Many people have problems with Section D the most difficult multiple choice section, but the pass rate is still pretty good 60% most of the time. Although it had a pretty bad number for Septembers…[Read more]

Got ya, that makes sense, it’s just one of those things that I find interesting only because I only hear about section D and not any of the other sections of the LARE.

It may not seem difficult now, but give it a few years. It’s a skill many LAs don’t use a great deal (believe it or not) and you forget some of it. Then there is the whole test effect. You have very limited time, the environment is stressful, and, just like real life, a simple mistake can cascade into something where the solution does not work.…[Read more]

Hi Keith
For the record we call an estimate an “Opinion of Probable Cost”. However we try to get these as close as possible, within 10% of the tender price, is good.

I emailed Ann Pryor at ASLA in DC regarding the lack of registration options for out of work Landscape Architects. I was told that since my membership lapsed that I basically had no options, besides attending the expo only for $25.00. This is of course the last place I want to be when at a conference, they should pay us to go to this product…[Read more]

Hi Callum,
The soil drainage is an issue that is particular to specific areas. Obviously soil types vary even in farmland. In our city (Louisville, Kentucky USA, We are a rivertown and sit right on the Banks of the mighty Ohio River. Areas close to the river and much of downtown Louisville is sitting on sand. Drainage is excellent there. However…[Read more]

Hi Steve
You make some very good points.
I agree totally with idea that you need good quality stock and that the species has to match the site conditions. Also that this is a better way to go than trying to artificially improve the soil conditions with amendments. Although the soil structure may be completely destroyed and amendments may be…[Read more]
