Concepts of Landscape 2010 15 years, 6 months agoDear all,
this group page is meant to give the participants of the seminar “Concepts of Landscape” an additional platform. Feel free to create your own profiles on land8lounge so that people can get to know each other a bit better.
Unfortunately, we do not have so much time during the seminar for social communication, even not for presenting you…[Read more]

Sorry to hear that you didn’t pass. Looks like you’re almost there. My only suggestion would be to maybe make a change in the way you take the test? I’m not sure what your strategy is when you are taking the exam but maybe that’s where your approach needs to change? Because by now you probably know most of the material in order to pass it, you…[Read more]

Be VERY careful what program you get into. I started my MLA this fall and I am regretting it. I have a BLA already, and am finding that the MLA program I am in is pretty much a repeat of the BLA. Being that you have experience already in planting and design, you should look for a program that can give you some sort of advanced standing. It would…[Read more]

Back to reality folks. There are not a whole lot of people that hire based on any of these political correct/incorrect crap. They hire the person who will help them the most with the least amount of overhead and wth the best liklihood of hanging around for the duration of the need for them and who will be less likely to use against you what they…[Read more]

If you do – and I pity the kids who were fathered out of spite – at least don’t ask us to give you preferential employment, benefits, etc. or fund their after-school soccer coach, or provide fuel economy breaks for your Hummer. Take responsibility for your choices (and your very employable attitude) and I’m fine with your mega-brood.
Of course,…[Read more]

Jonathan, will the 20 kids be toted around in the Hummer you have as a profile picture, or is that just another provocation?
You don’t have to go as far as Lagos. Just drive a few hours to the south to Ciudad Juarez on the border with El Paso and see the people living in shacks. Drive through after a rainstorm and see the raw sewage in the street,…[Read more] -

The notion that families are good because they keep the economy going is too hilarious to ignore, Ashish. I thought the point was for things to be the other way around. I trust you were joking
But continuous and endless population growth, like continuous and endless development is simply unsustainable and therefore a questionable economic value.…[Read more]

Agree with Rob wholeheartedly..90 million humans are added to the earth every year – with a conservative estimate – it goes up to 160 million a year in the nineties, late nineties..In La Jolla, Ca., there is one tiny beach where they won’t allow a few hundred of the 40,000 harbor seals along the Ca. coast establish a rookery – they need to make…[Read more]

Claudia,
Why does someone who decided to have a family “deserve” more support from an employer or Society than someone who did not? I can see that they have larger financial requirements, but that was their decision for their life. Why would an employer make decisions based on that? In fact, why would Society? Why is their family a more deserving…[Read more]

If you don’t mind me asking, did you already get accepted or is this the school that you have your heart set on?
If you were already accepted, did they allow you to defer a year. I’m really wanting to defer for one year so I can get in state tuition after establishing residency. -

Still working as a planner, in SC. I have had some interest from firms saying they are busy and asking if I would be willing to consider moving…but honestly that scares me a bit. I know that if I am hired and things tank again, I am the first to go…and I won’t uproot my family and move with that kind of unease. I know when I see a good thing,…[Read more]

I thought Collapse was great. He’s a good writer. Kept me interested through the whole thing, and not many books of that size have had such an effect. Diamond has been criticized for collecting information to support his theses, much as Mike Davis has, but he still makes a powerful argument. I went to a lecture by an anthropologist that attempted…[Read more]

I agree with you about there being too many graduates. I think that those who have families to support deserve jobs. I am lucky, I have a job…albeit as a planner. But if I had to choose who to hire, I’d choose someone with a family over a single, young graduate fresh out of school. They can work in other jobs for a year or so, it won’t kill…[Read more]

Hey Jeffrey. I’m sorry that this section has been so frustrating for you. Hopefully you can find some strategies here that will help. I did find the topics covered and the way questions were worded to be pretty bizarre. Really great point. Your comment made me think about planting trees in urban areas where they need synthetically supported root zones and engineered soil to even grow. Adaptation to tough conditions or an ever-shrinking niche?

Nice little article, and much easier to get through than “Collapse”…
The readers also had some good points, especially about streetcars.
One point that wasn’t very clear was the difference between complexity and diversity. It would be better to address many of these issues by enabling a variety of choices and options rather than designing…[Read more]

Yeah – we have a problem with scale. Its hard to intergrate this kind of thinking into everyday life. I think thats actually what he’s saying – that to not design our way into disaster we have think systemically and specifically simultaneously (what a mouthful!) which is a challenge for the most adept multitasker. Really – most people struggle…[Read more]

Have you read “Collapse” by Jared Diamond? The case studies he presents show that “hubris” as a societal phenomenon is hardly a post WWII phenomeonon.
Yes, design needs more of this kind of thinking, but its just too much to grasp for most people. Try talking to your clients about the complex systems that their project is tied into, and they’ll…[Read more]
