Yes, I too hope that the economy picks up. Even though I am in the States, and there are many schools that offer Landscape Architecture, I am also limited geographically. My husband has to be able to work and support us while I am in school, and that puts us in New York, San Fran, or Seattle. So therefore I am quite limited. Applying to UC…[Read more]

That’s really nice that you are in a more flexible situation. Sounds like a smart plan. Good luck finding the perfect fit!

Tanya,
So if you could have any effect on root zone temperature, you’d want to keep it chilled in winter (ah mulch) rather than risk any warming

I like Macs I really do as a matter of fact I made a good living selling Macs back in the day when Steve Jobs first ran Apple. I am sure that the programs run just fine using Mac’s PC emulator. The problem is that your are running an OS inside another OS. And the overhead cost you pay for that is performance degredation. The larger the 3d model or…[Read more]

I am not so sure LandFx is relevant anymore. And Autocad? .If ever there was an expensive country club to pay dues to, they would be at the top of my list. Their Upgrade policy’s amount to what some would consider piracy! Find a flavor of Intellicad. You will need the Pro version of SketchUP… SketchUP Pro ves. 8. This will allow your to import…[Read more]

More and more LA’s are using Autocad (Me I use Intellicad-a Autocad knock-off that is way cheaper) and Google SketchUP pro. There is a SketchUP group here on the Lounge. Just click on the green Groups tab you will see it there. Daniel Tal has a book out on using Sketch Pro for Landscape design it is very helpful and he conducts webinars that are…[Read more]

Absolutely NOT! Unless you are taping in to geology where the earth’s crust is thin and hot water is close to the surface like in Yosemite. Most Geothermal wells are pumping water down into the well and the tapping into the constant ground temperature which is usually 50 degrees. That means in the summer you are pumping water that is hotter than…[Read more]

Well just remember especially with a Shade Tree it probably will only be a potential problem 40 or 50 years from now. If your client is in their mid-20’s they aren’t likely to be in the same house in 40 years, If your clients are in their late 40’s or early 50’s the root incursion won’t be a problem that they will be dealing with either.

Yeah, the post was meant to be sorta simplistic for humor’s sake. I have benfitted many times, both directly and indirectly, from the actions of lawyers. And no, I’ve never been arrested.
Its the lawyers who do most of the presentation for the planning board and fight to get the project approved, and they earn substantial rewards for it. -

They are both Australian natives and adapted to a wide range conditions, but I’m not familiar with them enough to advise on their preferred growing conditions. As mentioned above you really need to match the water needs closely, otherwise there will always be a problem. You could also look into different kind of agave as some of them can take more…[Read more]

Man, Boilerplater, does that seem naive..Lawyers may be having the same trouble we are having with job availablity, but they make twice as much as we do and often work on the same issues, and their determinations are the final word – have you never worked for local government? It is the lawyer who will tell you how many parking spaces you have to…[Read more]

Could be worse. You could’ve gone to LAW SCHOOL! See:http://www.slate.com/id/2272621/?gt1=38001
Apparently work for lawyers went of a cliff as well. Then you have those student loans and the common loathing of lawyers to deal with! Nobody has ever made jokes like “Q. What do you call 100 landscape architects at the bottom of the ocean? A. A good…[Read more] -

Yeah, you make a good point about maintenance later down the road. Didn’t realize combining agaves would turn out to be so difficult when it came to deciding on a mulch….

There will be rows of Lomandra longifolia ‘Breeze’ and Dianella revoluta on both sides of the Agave. Its in Southern California, Sunset Zone #18. They will be getting full sun, which is why I was concerned about using the d.g. around them since I didn’t want them to burn up in the valley heat….

Agave, like most desert plants, are indigenous to soils that have very low levels of organic matter. They tend to prefer it that way in cultivation. In my experience, agaves in platers can be affected by heating of the soil, particularly if it has a southern exposure. Of course it get much hotter in Las Vegas, where I am, than Thousand Oaks. Here…[Read more]
