Grape flavored grass!? The geese might not like it but it sounds delicious to me…

There’s no companies with trained border collies to chase them off in your area? They use them at a lot of airports in the northeast. CA Geese are tough birds. Go near their nest when they have eggs or goslings, and they’ll chase YOU away.

Have you looked at Leed ND? That seems to apply the most to LA’s.

Sorry for the late response. My best case scenario is to return back to landscape architecture when I finish the MBA program. I am a MBA student with a concentration in Marketing. I agree with you and feel that a concentration in Marketing will be a huge advantage in any firm (large or small) for the same reasons you mentioned. My two friends who…[Read more]

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback, we do have a lot to consider, unfortunately we have less than two weeks before the final project. We really aren’t looking for short-cuts but more like small nudges in certain directions, we’ve got our concepts so we’ll start looking at different aspects of chinese culture along with the options you…[Read more]

I do a lot of research in as many different books than I can and even take a walk through garden centers to get to know what is new and what is not working. There are plenty of local gardens that I visit as well that give you a good idea of what looks great down the road. Around here we have an arboretum that is a great place to learn how things…[Read more]

“Get a few of your friends from class who are serious about the program, go back to the site with your cameras and sketchbooks and hang out all day. Go explore the neighborhood, check out the industrial areas, have lunch at one of the local restaurants, talk to locals about what they’d like to see happen… go get out there!”
I strongly agree.…[Read more]

If what you are advocating is basically “Think about native plants so you are not only thinking about all the Asian landscape Usual Suspects” then absolutely! I guess I didn’t get that point because I don’t think of plantings in such a way.

A good example of what cannot be replicated in a monoculture can be found in our practice of silviculture. Doug Fir / Hemlock monocultures for example are devoid of soil fungi that are symbiotic if not essential health of the entire ecological system.
For instance, there exists a vole that eats only a certain type of mushroom that grows naturally…[Read more]

i agree, I already said before that this site is entirely artificial.. that does not mean there is not a context, (There were SWOaks in Brooklyn, as far as I know..) nor that there is a need to get beyond sweetgums, very very often, and at least looking at what is local can help the brain get out of the grooves..
I actually can’t believe Sweet…[Read more]

Perhaps we are looking at this from two different points. My reaction was that in a centuries old city, where Northeast woodlands (actually this area was underwater “originally”) have been completely replaced with structure and concrete/glass/steel the environment is entirely new. There is no “native.” And what was once native is not the most…[Read more]

I completely disagree about two centuries ago being completely irrelevant, Rob… In the first place, even just considering what was there, originally, opens the normal landscrapers mind up a bit to possibilities…I think if another subdivison is planted with sweet gums, we will be able to see the impression of sweet gum foliage from…[Read more]

I agree with all of that.
And continue to feel that a monoculture on this scale is a disaster waiting to happen.Sadly, it is getting more and more difficult to select good plants for some sites. Old standards do not hold and a monoculture based on historical assumptions is not a sustainable design. New insects and diseases are spreading (Asian…[Read more]

Well, my side business got much busier this year without anything that I’m doing to make that happen. “The CPD has been planning a second development-stage of the park’s nearly 11 undeveloped acres north of 18th Street. The plan calls for the development of the area’s shoreline and access points, as well as the construction of a cultural arts and recreational facility and a boathouse. The project is estimated to cost $38 million. In September…[Read more]
