Jay,
Don’t feel like your alone. I was laid off last March 2009 from a great job here in St. Louis with a large international firm. After about 6 months of searching all over again, I decided to go back to school to get my MBA in Marketing. I got a part-time job (which killed my already shattered ego), as well as an internship with a local…[Read more]

Thanks for all the input! I was considering other options and the firm I work for has a trimble gps for projects. I have a Garmin as stated above and was curious what experiences others have had. It is a farily expensive model that tracks your elevation change and what not…though I am in the process of testing that accuracy. I wouldnt be…[Read more]

This is the first I’ve heard of this site, but the photos look great. I’ll be watching this topic as I’m interested in how others are using this service.
Not sure how the quality and coverage compares to Pictometry, but Bing and Google Maps both offer oblique aerials. Google Maps also integrates with SketchUp 8 and Building Maker.

Ya, I agree with Jonathan, you have to provide more information. I believe that your study doesn’t cover the whole Penang state or Penang Island. I am in Penang and I did my master thesis about revitalizing the heritage site in Georgetown. Let me know what info you need. There are a few bodies, gov and non gov have been doing research, you also…[Read more]

Agreed. Because of the budgets here around DC, most of the medians aren’t even mowed this year. Its great. It looks sooooo much better than when it is mowed and the clppings are all clumped and nasty. I think they should just mow 8′ in (for a shoulder) and let the rest go natural…trees and all. But we all know what traffic/trans engineers thing…[Read more]

Certainly keeps ME employed, Boilerplater! Hee hee..Every action has reactions, I geuss..I am sure I am going to loose my anti-irrigation crusade, anyway – it is like gospel around here, the sainted holy central valley of the irrigated landscape..While the sierra snowpack diminishes, the governator wants to build some huge tunnel to capture more…[Read more]

You’re going to need to provide a little more information than that…Whats the context? Scale? etc…

Hey, all that planting and irrigating keeps people employed! But for a fiscally strapped state like California, that may not be the wisest course of action.

Thank you, Theodore, so it seems like you are saying ‘captured views’ is the only landscaping they do? I like that! We are busy in California planting and irrigating, for people driving 80 mph, and I just think it is wrong!

When I was there last, ~2 yrs ago or so, I noticed several habitat bridges along the way. They’re pretty interesting to read about. They are essentially designed to reduce the wildlife habitat fragmentation that occurs along with the building of major habitat barriers like autobahns/freeways. There is no accommodation for vehicular or pedestrian…[Read more]

The way it is done in my neighborhood is by setting it in at least an inch of mortar bed. You have to remember that the stone is not going to be exactly an inch thick unless it is saw cut. You have to have enough of a mortar bed to not only set the stone, but to give way to a thicker stone so that the surface is even. Set the stone but do not…[Read more]

Use a masonry saw, home depot might rent them, or use a diamond blade on a circular saw or grinder. You don’t have to cut all the way through. Cut 1/2 – 3/4 through and use a chisel / hammer to snap it off…
Read this and go to town! Have fun! Let us know how it turns out…

This ought to get you started… You could probably come up with a lot of cool ways to do the deck/platform, maybe even use some kind of groovy sand for the pit… as it is nonspecific sand/clay.

I’ve seen this done by using slurry over sand bed system, in turn over concrete. The setting is 3 parts masonry sand and 1 part portland. The slurry is 1/2 bag of portland for 5 gal of water. Use acid/brick wash to clean efflourescence/surface mortar 3 days after install.
Never having actually done it myself, I would probably hire a contractor to…[Read more]
