My friend works for Jeffrey L. Bruce and Company, out of Kansas City, a Landscape Architecture firm that has soil scientist in house. I know the have consulted with numerous other landscape architect’s on just soils. They do great work. http://www.jlbruce.com/
They explain their approach right on their main page.
“What if we design soils, sites,…[Read more]

The test is not about ‘aesthetic’ design which I assume any designer would have some skill with. The test is determining your ability to follow rules and maintain minimum life, safety, welfare standards. If you want the word ‘architect’ in your landscape architect job title, you are going to have to earn it. Like it or not, errors in our designs…[Read more]

I left a good book out. Plan graphics for the landscape designer by Tony bertauski. Its actually a relatively cheap book but it’s packed full of info

Another good book is residential landscape architecture ( by booth and hiss) which walks you through the design process but also has sections on color rendering and drawing perspectives from photos. The three listed by Thomas are currently on my coffee on my table and are pretty much standard books for designers/la’s.

Middle East Landscape 15 years, 8 months agoHello Agnes Sophia! The best for you is to come to the UAE and look at the spot. Though that there is a lot of available professionals at the market seems that previous UAE or ME experience is critical. Be focused and persistent and certainly you will find something sooner or later. Good luck!

I don’t know if you are looking for a HUGE CE group, but Barr Engineering out of Minneapolis has a good reputation….I know a LA who work(ed?) for them doing wetland restoration and I’m certain soils were are significant part of his work. They do a lot of remediation / contamination / wetlands / etc. I worked with the LA in college, but have not…[Read more]

I’m interested in what else you discovered during your study of the various licensing exams. Do tell!

As an FYI, we did a study of license exams a few years ago in my office and it turns out the PE exam is all multiple choice. No drawing. It probably explains why engineers can’t grade 🙂

Your redline review sounds similar to mine. I did not make the same mistake again and I doubt if you did either. These are the people who benefit from the redline review.
I don’t know what anyone expects a licensure exam to be other than something similar to what it is. You can’t quantifiably measure “creativity” and frankly it is not what…[Read more]

Also: in terms of buying (if this relates to how you got your autocad)
“Federal appeals court ruled today that the first sale doctrine is “unavailable to those who are only licensed to use their copies of copyrighted works.” This reverses a 2008 decision from the Autodesk case, in which a man was selling used copies of AutoCAD that were not…[Read more] -

Contact your local arborist, they can be very good with soils. Or you can try your local extension office. They usually are partnered with the USDA and can address soil issues on a very local level. I don’t know how far he will travel, but James Urban is the best there is with soils and trees. He has a book out as well.

I must agree with Jeffery. The test is just mentally and spiritually frustrating. It is nothing more than a bureaucratic hoop jumping experience. By no means does it truly test ones ability as a Landscape Architect. It is not based upon real world experience or typical process. In particular, the Grading and Drainage Section is almost comical.…[Read more]

Denver LA 15 years, 8 months agoHello all! I’m new to the Denver area and excited to see that there is a L.A. Denver group. My family and I just relocated from San Francisco about 6 months ago with our now 21 month old daughter. We are loving it! The unfortunate part (for me anyway) is that I had to give up my job and am now back in the job market. Ya…not the greatest time to…[Read more]

To tell the truth, I’d like a long term sub-consultant relationship as issues do crop up in many projects.
Currently I have one new field (for lack of a better term) that was completed in May and then was badly mismanaged and baked to a hardpan in the summer’s Southern heat. It needs to be aerated without ripping it to shreds. Right now it sheds…[Read more]

I concur with Mr. Lin and would add http://crackskullbob.squarespace.com/
He draws a lot of people, but I really enjoy his technique and looseness.
