Actually Ace, it is a Pollock; “Untitled [Silver over Black, White, Yellow, and Red]” (1948).
Unless you were trying to make a funny about my statement being a faux pas (faux Pollock)… in which case, I say, “sacred cows are the most delicious…”

Then again, I’m cursed with a perfect balance of right / left hemispheres. It’s true, I’ve been tested. I can see the art and design but also the business side of things. Most people in a studio can only see one or the other and as a result those personalities are constantly at odds with each other. IT wants order and efficiency, designer wants a…[Read more]

I thin a lot of offices are run by both partners with ‘business sense,’ whether they have an MBA or not, as well as ‘designers.’
An design office run by MBA’s has disaster written all over it in my opinion, unless the MBA’s also have a background and experience in design, of which I think there are few because people with MBA’s tend to want to…[Read more]

Dear god, thank you. Can I please come work for you?
“How many of your senior management or partners have an MBA? And why don’t they?” – This is an excellent point. and a subject that I’ve given much thought. If I were to go back to school, would an MLA or an MBA be most valuable? Why doesn’t our profession insist upon business men running the…[Read more]

Doesn’t the idea of creating a nursery for large projects appeal to anyone? The labour is there and the workers enjoy it. They get fulfillment from lifting saplings before the ground is cleared or pillaging local woods, even growers sites, for some money (they usually sell oversize/bare root stock cheap rather than burn it), though other material…[Read more]

I think the proverbial ship has sailed with regard to Dubai, but I may be wrong.
I think the rumors of huge salaries and amazing contracts may have been hype, too by and large.

While its not for me personally, it seems like Dubai has been the haven for people in the development field willing to live in a totally different culture to get some job security and lots of work. I even looked at a recent ‘success story’ on my landscape CAD newsletter, and it was from Dubai! I dont know if the development explosion has died down…[Read more]

Why not fragrance?
Indeed, why not sound? …like the rustling/clacking of large bamboo in a breeze -

Check out some of the green walls being installed in Europe. They can change the scale of buildings in a hurry. Also check out Gas Works Park in Seattle Washington.
I agree, without knowing what the site looks like I am guessing at what might work.

I would agree that all except fragance, play a role in their ornamental value. I think of ornamental as architectural (must be the architect in me); so most times that i design an architectural garden i look for vertical plants (grasses-snake plant-bamboo), balanced structure, nice”design” leaf or frond structure (such as agaves)…nice contrast…[Read more]

Landscape can certainly effect the feel of the space. Just look at Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam. What was a Coal->Gas conversion plant is now a park with space for public art and festivals.
Architecture may be important to use as well, but its hard to say without actually seeing the site.
Its hard to say what might work at all without seeing…[Read more]

Theodore Tegen replied to the topic What is your favourite software for estimating construction costs? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 15 years, 9 months ago
I don’t use anything special beyond a custom spreadsheet in ms excel. I fill the spreadsheet with pricing knowledge gained over the years. I update this periodically based on bid tabulations that I receive from contractors for various projects. I’m sure someone will chime in, but I don’t even know of any landscape specific estimating software.

That some good constructive criticism, Tim, thanks!
I was in a rush to get a copy of this out the other day only to print it after I had sent it digitally to find that some of the images were lower resolution like you mentioned. I also noticed some of the spacing issues–are you saying you also do not like ‘full bleed’ images or that there is…[Read more]

That’s an interesting idea, Meg.
I also like to count/edit manually for totals. A red marker really helps. The weird thing for me is that I can no longer print larger than 11 x 17 at my office. I’ve outsourced to FedEx. It just takes getting used to printing smaller–or maybe in sections. (I do save paper and ink!) I always have a “draft” layout…[Read more] -
Tempe Macgowan replied to the topic Hey, does anyone know of any work available in Asia or Australia? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 9 months ago
Australia has had an economic downturn rather than a recession so whilst there a lot of LA’s have been affected (especially ones who
work globally) a lot of people are really busy, Try looking at the institute’s website – aila.or.au – and there’s a job vacancies page and
you can get an idea of what’s going and also some of the practices under each…[Read more] -

Late on this, but a little note. I really appreciate this conversation as I will be trying some different ways to schedule… My comment is simply about counting. -As you’ve mentioned, bcount can be risky if you aren’t well purged. And though I am not super-controlling of my block attributes, I am with the layers where they are placed.
When…[Read more]
