Lee,
Of the people who I know who have degrees in landscape architecture (who have been out of school for many years), more are design/build landscape contractors who never went after the licensing (most because they went into or already were into a business of their own). That opportunity is not denied to you just because you got your…[Read more]

I would say that $50/hour is pretty reasonable for entry level consulting. If you fear that you have a learning curve that might gauge the client, then perhaps charge a lump sum fee. Otherwise, I would avoid a lump sum fee, especially if the site plan might change.

I would also love to read the paper. I’m starting my senior project in a month and I will be doing a lot of work in 3D, so this 4D design sounds really interesting.
Thanks

I have stayed on the ‘old strip’ at Binyions, and I think that is a great vegas experience, compared to the new strip..betting and gambling going on 24 hours, you loose track of the world, the outdoors..To me that is vegas..Although that MAY not be the kind of recommendation you are looking for in a landscape site!
good luck!

Excellent. Well said.
And I’d mention that often one group has bad things to say abut the other. – Usually depending on their own self esteem. -

Yeah, I migt be taking this too seriously after reading the thousands of posts about how we are not respected and that we are better than anyone else for design solutions from students and unemployed landscape architects. I’m getting brainwashed.
Sorry to be to hard on you and the subject.
I work full time in a multi-purpose role as the only…[Read more]

Andrew… you just came up with three or four good ideas… now they can be explored to see how they fit into the park. Sometimes you need to throw out two dozen ideas to find three that might work for this area. I think this is all this request is trying to accomplish.

Since you don’t know me or my efforts to promote LA. I will just let this one go. Sometimes you just want a small idea, not a big production. You have a different perspective and I hope it works for you.
Are you a sole practitioner or do you work in a professional office?

And if you want to see some great nature as well, go up to Red Rock Canyon. It’s beautiful, it’s cooler than the valley, and it’s quite accessible. http://www.desertusa.com/redrock/

The top thing I can think of to go to is Springs Preserve. Great architecture, LA and it’s a wonderful sustainable project. They have desert gardens and great learning experiences too. Have lunch at Wolfgang Pucks while there. http://www.springspreserve.org/plan/plan_your_visit.html

It just seems to me that it would not take much to know a little about the demographics just by what part of town it is in if time and budget constraints made further effort out of the question. It is known that the shuffleboard court exists, so either someone has been there or there is a plan showing it. I would expect that other things could be…[Read more]

So it would be Ok for the chair of Harvard GSD to enter an academic project? Maybe this has already been done?
I know that the awards jury reviews projects anonymously, but I would think it would seem pretty obvious to me if I were on the jury the geographic location of these projects. Are these really The Best or is there some agenda or…[Read more]

Well sometimes in the real world we have to just think quickly.
We have no small scale demographics for the site or for the whole county for that matter. We have not been approached by any user groups of interest and we can’t read people’s minds. We don’t have the resources to observe who uses the park (It is one of 417 parks in our system), we…[Read more]

My Hallaluyah pertained to Gabinos postings about LA’s tending to be snobs. So true it’s disgusting. If you hadn’t noticed, we wear turtle necks with sport jackets a lot.

Hallaluyah. If you hadn’t read my other posts I wrote the same in a more subtle way. Craig remarked about Accountants. My wife is an Accountant and she’s paying the bills right now so I can continue my “hobby.”
Many many years ago I met a “landscaper” at an ALCA annual expo in Atlanta. We didn’t know each other but, coincedentially, went to the…[Read more]

There is no demographic user group to start with? There are no adjacent activities?
Thinking small does not mean you can not make observations and make conclusions based upon them, does it? You can choose to look at it as a concrete slab and try to come up with all the possible uses of a concrete slab, but that is only one aspect.
There must be…[Read more]

The parks do have master plans, but this is outside the scope. Sometimes we just need to think small.

The difference between a landscape architect and a landscape designer is the landscaper was busy making money for the last 5 years in a good economy while the rest of us sat in a classroom getting a worthless degree.

… there must be a current type of comprehensive plan whether it is a plan of physical features or of activities that are wanted to be encouraged. Use those as a guide and try to bend the site to fit those needs or bend those desired activities to fit the site. This is supposed to be what makes us better than engineers and architects, isn’t it?
