Interpretive Playground, Maple Grove, Minnesota, 2015

Central Park in Maple Grove, Minnesota sits on more than 45 acres of former gravel mining land. After 10 years of development, it finally opened in 2015 featuring something for everyone – open lawn space, interactive fountains with LED lighting, pickle ball and basketball courts, trails, an ice skating loop, and other great amenities. But one of its most unique features that sets it apart from other parks in the state is its play space.

Built over a 4-month period through a collaborative process involving Flagship Recreation and Landscape Structures, the construction process involved extensive landform and custom component work. Net, tower, and rock structures allow for climbing and exploration. A distinct ages 2 to 5 area encourages sensory development, while innovational independent components expand the play space.

Overall, the thought behind this design was to move away from an idea of theming and to place the interpretation into the eyes of those participating in the play experience. Surely, with its unique design and features, this play area will be a focal point of the park for many years to come.
