    Michael,

I would start by asking yourself a different question.  What do you enjoy most in life and what are the things you are naturally good at?  If you enjoy strolling the park and find yourself sketching landscapes and waterfalls and loving it – then you might want to pursue Landscape Architecture.  That’s what I did.  And I enjoy being a Landscape Architect and find my work rewarding.

Thanks for explaining. I can agree with that. I find myself inspired by older published work by Ian McHarg and Jane Jacobs but not so much by recent writings… Maybe it’s because McHarg and Jacobs were more like leaders/activists than designer or writer.

I don’t understand what the NY Times editorial page has to do with this post. The abstract by Mr. Thayer, dated or not, still brings to mind a lot of issues about “sustainable” landscapes that Landscape Architects struggle with today. We all moved on a little too fast, didn’t we? Can we solve our current environmental/social issues with the newest, latest technologies – or – do we need to look back for the solutions?

Yes, but most all our recent projects are dead or went on hold.

I have had a similar experience with ‘greywater’ systems in Portland, OR. These are usually part of the municipal systems and are classified as ‘non-potable’. I think that it is possible to use ‘greywater’ for irrigation on commercial projects – but my instincts tell me that arch / land arch don’t do it because the permitting process and long term maintenance would be a nightmare.
However, for residential work, I believe there is an easier permit process you can go through. I think a licensed plumber needs to be involved in this process. As for ‘Blackwater’ (toilet water), this can’t be done, as far as I know.

Good work. I especially like the music choice 🙂
