So I spent about a week trying to insert a design into Blender’s gaming engine. The outcome worked ok, but wasn’t very pretty. The process went like this:

    1. Wrote script to randomly generate terrain in Maya.
    2. Made a post and cloned it, then used the vortex dynamic to blow them around the terrain.
    3. Created a ncloth from a nurbs plane and…[Read more]

  • This past weekend I took Richard Scott’s Sketching on Location Workshop in Central Park. Great class. Twelve “students” from high school junior to college students to middle-aged designers. Richard is a great teacher, clear, supportive and scary good at drawing and water color. I plan on continuing freehand sketching and water coloring (?) for fun…[Read more]

Hey Jason, looks like the department has decided to ask you to lecture this coming Fall. I know it seems like it has taken forever, and I apologize but we have been very busy restructuring our program and interviewing potential department heads. The good news is that they still want you to come and lecture and the program is doing great. I also…[Read more]

Has anyone used epiphytes on green walls, and if so what success rate did you have. How did you attach them to the walls, simply on a wire trellis structure or did you use something more intricate – any info would be great!

Well, I have been away for awhile.
I have been looking at the use of Maya Dynamics to force design.

It is kind of fun but I don’t know if it will go anywhere. Has anyone used
any of the dynamic functions in Maya (Airfield, Gravity, Newtonian field etc)?

    Rob,

There are a lot of good softwares out there, selection really depends on your situation and needs. I would “demo’ as many softwares as possible to see which one fits your office best.

For Autocad, Raincad for Autocad works well. It runs in Autocad as a toolbar, similar to Express Tools. You still have the full function of autocad while…[Read more]

I was able to find some irrigation training and I am more confident now. However, I am looking to purchase irrigation design software. What are the best choices out there? Land F/X? IrriCalc? RainCAD? Others?

  • yep, sure I could contribute! well done Jennifer

I noted Rico listed Ace Torre as an influence. I recently completed an extensive article profiling Torre for next month’s (May 09) issue of Landscape Architecture Magazine. It’s an in-depth look at his design drawing philosophies and techniques, with step by step photos of Torre in the studio creating one of his famous “tilt-up” aerial drawings.

  • Great idea for a group! As I accumulate drawings with each class, I am at a loss of what to do with it all, what is worthy to include in a portfolio and how best to create a portfolio.

I want to sharpen my irrigation skills and train one of my coworkers. Are there any free online tutorials with practice problems that we could download? Any help would be much appreciated.

I thought I would post a few Grasshopper files that I made to help out in the site engineering department. They basically interpolate contours a couple of different ways.

The first one works on contour lines and the second on elevation points. I made a third for roads but I am not sure about it…[Read more]

    Hi Doug,

Check out the California Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance, at http://www.owue.water.ca.gov/. It is in the process of final revision and is set to go into effect January 2010. It outlines the services and responsibilities of CIDs.

The CID process is pretty involved with classes and tests and can take awhile to get certified. If…[Read more]
