December 12, 2012 at 6:02 am #156002Craig de NeckerParticipantHi Haley,
Thanks for the link – I have had a quick look at the site and downloaded the demo with some pdf files that they have.
We close for the end of the year on Friday until mid January but hopefully I will get a chance to have a look at it before then.

Thank you for your reply.
I guess it’s difficult to turn clients away, so instead one grows the business in order to be able to serve more and more clients… teething problems! One has to find the right staff and forge ahead!
Setting the tomorrow standard and slowing down is great advice.

Thanks for the kind comments about our work!
Yep – I think you have pretty much hit the nail on the head. I work insane hours and my work is my life… I am looking to find an assistant-type person who has an eye for detail and can help me spread my workload a bit… its Sunday and I was at work at 06h45 this morning… not good!
June 13, 2012 at 4:08 pm #158108Craig de NeckerParticipantWelcome to the Lenovo club!
I can also recommend some software… RedStick CAD (one of the better CAD apps for Android) and Evernote (sync’s notes between pc, mac, ipad, iphone, android, blackberry devices) with the Skitch plugin (draw freehand in Evernote)
Enjoy!

June 8, 2012 at 7:00 pm #157345Craig de NeckerParticipantHi there,
An alternative could be cobblestone edging – we have a huge demand for this kind of edging. For a more contemporary look, you could use a cobble with cleaner lines,or perhaps granite cobbles… here’s an example using a 100 x 100mm cobblestone set in concrete… it’s not as clean as steel, but there are some manufacturers with narrower, less obvious versions and of course a darker color will not stand out as much…
June 8, 2012 at 7:16 am #157427Craig de NeckerParticipantHi Jordan,
Yep – i think that a performance-based remuneration system could be a solution. The staff don’t understand the cost of having to re-install, re-anything… and of course there are also opportunity costs – ie delaying other work while sorting out problems that should not have been there in the first place.
June 8, 2012 at 7:13 am #157428Craig de NeckerParticipantHi Mark,
We have had mixed performance from people who previously had their own businesses, but your thinking makes sense – I think it’s a good idea to find out more information as to why the business was not successful… don’t want history to repeat itself… thanks for your insight
June 4, 2012 at 6:11 am #157431Craig de NeckerParticipantHi Andrew,
Thanks for the reply. In the early days, i was the site manager, I was everything but in order to grow the business, I had to start hiring other people to assist with installations… I know that in the States, there are numerous very big landscaping design and build companies and I would love to know how they deal with quality control issues.
I also find that when one has trained up the staff to a good level of performance vs quality, they start looking to start their own company – mostly these businesses do not last even a year, but it causes massive disruption to our activities.
I can easily see why one would want to leave the contracting side to someone else.
June 4, 2012 at 6:05 am #157432Craig de NeckerParticipantThanks for your reply Mark,
They do have the technical skills to pull it off, I think it’s more about laziness and hoping that no one will notice.
May 21, 2012 at 6:49 pm #157471Craig de NeckerParticipantThanks Rob – yep… as they say Big Brother is watching 😉
April 7, 2012 at 8:02 pm #158092Craig de NeckerParticipantYou can try Google SketchUp – accurate drawing and you can choose to use a myriad of styles…
