india / landscape 12 years, 8 months agoAdit, Thank you very much for your response. LA Journal is a fantastic resource. Unfortunately I have discovered that it is hard to find books on LA in India.
Perhaps there are some good blogs or websites? -

Habitat Restoration and Mitigation 14 years, 2 months agoTanya, thanks for the advice. My first option would be to get professional experience in restoration design before I go back to school and I’m very much looking into that but also looking to keep my options open. Also, thanks for the advice about the portfolio, that’s something that I’m aware of but it slipped my mind at the time. Changing now, thanks!

Habitat Restoration and Mitigation 14 years, 2 months agoHey Charles – rather than spending more $$$ you might try an internship with someplace like Barr Engineering in Minneapolis – they have a lengthy restroration portfolio. If you want hands-on experience you might call them to ask who does the installation of their projects. Ann Riley’s Waterways Restoration Institute in Berkley, CA might be a g…[Read more]

india / landscape 15 years, 2 months agoNatalia,
Mumbai lies in a humid sub-tropical environment (as compared to dry sub-tropical inland) so most pan-tropical plants from south America and south-east Asia will do well there. The only thing to be concerned about is that if you’re very close to the sea, then the plants need to be salt spray tolerant.
The absolutely best reference book…[Read more]

india / landscape 15 years, 6 months agoDoes anybody have any experience with LEED projects in India? We are working on a possible LEED ND project in Tamil Nadu and I’m not sure how some of the US requirements will transfer over there. Is the USGBC pretty amenable to adjusting the prerequisites based on differences in infrastructure systems?
(N.B., I’m going to repeat this question over…[Read more] -

india / landscape 16 years, 1 month agoNanda – perhaps the best way to keep track of landscape architecture in India is through the Journal of Landscape Architecture – http://www.lajournal.in (disclosure – I am the advisory editor and write regularly for it). It is a very well produced and well-regarded (esp for it’s independence) magazine. At $50 for 4 issues international it’s a little…[Read more]

Habitat Restoration and Mitigation 16 years, 8 months agoRe Justin and Glass Factory Brownfield conditions.
Is there contamination of anything other than “broken glass” and in what condition would that contaminate be? .. Glass is just another form of sand, I wonder if you could tumble the contaminated ground in something like what they tumble new bricks to make them look old. Smooth off the edges, maybe…[Read more] -

Habitat Restoration and Mitigation 16 years, 8 months agoIn regards to mitigation measures for the redevelopment of brownfield sites, the two design options that I am most familiar with, is to install a 40mil impervious linear and or install 3′ of clean fill.
The basic concept is that you are capping the areas of contaminated soils with a liner or with soil.In regards to the impervious liner,…[Read more]
