Did you have any luck with AutoCAD classes? My experience in Australia is that the AutoCAD classes are targeted almost wholly to Architects and Engineers.

I have always used relative pathing. For me there has never been any benefit to using full pathing – BUT there has been a big disadvantage to using full pathing.
