ParticipantNicely done, I’d be interested in hearing what concessions will and will not be made for the sake of universal access. For the 3D renderings, did you build the model in SketchUp or Rhino before photoshopping the images?

ParticipantI can’t help but the that a lot of her Abu Dhabi work looks boring, in the sense that it’s very standard one-size fits all urbanity that the powers that be in the gulf states want, but with Schwartz’s trademark pop art aesthetics thrown on top. I get the impression that Abu Dhabi already had a standard idea of what they wanted but wanted the fashionability of the name on top. Generally like dictators do, nothing exciting unless it’s BIG BIG the BIGGEST, and a fashionable name on top.
That said, I do like that project acknowledges sea level change. I hear that she had to fight tooth and nail to get that into the project.

ParticipantThat sounds like an interesting mix of work right now! I have a history of working in government and I like the fit for a variety of reasons. I currently work for my State governmnent doing air monitoring, and I like that I’m serving the public, the relative security and the insulation from the market (i.e. I don’t necessarily have to be hustling out in the world for clients, etc etc). Municipal work interests me for the same reason, though I’m certainly not opposed to working for a private firm. When I get out of school I’ll certainly be casting a wide net in terms of the job search.
The work you do with construction management, is that something you learned on the job?

ParticipantWyatt, I’m currently in grad school but I’m interested in doing municipal work in the future. What are some of the projects you’ve worked on?

ParticipantHi Chelsea, if you have experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS/ArcView then the Michigan Center for Geographic Data may be of help to you. They’ve got some pretty complete maps avaiable here: http://www.mcgi.state.mi.us/mgdl/
Additionally, I would look at the website for the Southeast Michigan Coalition of Governments (SEMCOG). They keep a lot of info on the communties of the seven counties surrounding Detroit. Just google SEMCOG and you should be able to find their website. Best of luck!
