After a few weeks of pacing my hallway bemoaning my unavoidable graduation, wondering what the potential thermal value of my trio of diplomas is and watching way way to much Bloomberg News I can agree with both you pessimists out there and the more optimistic folks as well. this great deprivation ends when the bucks start stopping in my wallet…[Read more]

Tim Marten replied to the topic What should the goal of the Landscape Architect be on the project team? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 5 months ago
It’s funny how often I get this same question from students. They see and study big landscape driven projects and wonder why there summer internships projects all began and end with the engineers or architects final base plane. Ultimately this year I have given the same response, only you can prevent being on the bottom of the pile. Andrew as in t…[Read more]

Tim Marten replied to the topic How do I get a job at a sustainable design firm (when things improve) in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 15 years, 8 months ago
I got my Permaculture certification in 08 and your right in saying it has a lot of overlap with being and thinking like an LA or and ecological designer. I Know one thing about my Permaculture background now it that it starts a conversation and a conversation is an opportunity. I was in a three day intensive design charette on a JJR and before the…[Read more]

I admit to being just nerd enough to diagram articles when reading for a class, but I’m not sure if I can admit to doing just about what you laid out. I would need to add to your list what I wanted to gain or learn from X firm or the process and approach used in marketing myself for a job.

Tim Marten replied to the topic Presentation board format…..help!!! in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 8 months ago
Use hyperlinks to slides with in your power point. I hide my hyperlinks in images or along the bottom and always have a page of them at the end so I can 1 click my way back to a slide or section. My midterm thesis presentation was a hurdle also, i had to present a 169 tab excel file that was my modeling and analysis, I dont think the department…[Read more]

When you start at the bottom you have no where to go but up.
12 years ago i was pushing lawns, shelping stone, slining dirt and being told to replant that bush for the 4th time that day, but i have stuck with it and followed opportunities and paths as they came up. I may still be looking for work despite a BLA, MLA and MUP, and LEED AP but I’m…[Read more] -
Tim Marten replied to the topic ASLA needs to market us! in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 8 months ago
That is a strong proposition but if we step back and look at the perspective and context, many of these acts were fought tooth and nail in some states by architects and engineers. I think the political stamina and lobbying that it would take to sustain a campaign to strengthen practice acts or upgrade title acts would and could benefit us all in…[Read more]
