“This discussion is getting more complicated than it’s worth. Forget about “LAs don’t know plants” because when there are 2,500 different selections of Dianthus to choose from who gives a crap anymore.”
Errrrr
Rick i don’t need to read anything to know what garden/landscape is but I do find it rather interesting that at a time when public spa…[Read more] -

Leslie, ‘Gardens imply the hand of man somewhat more’ Mmm i would have thought that most LA work alludes more to that ‘hand’ than spaces softened by living matter?

Thanks Henry, I would have thought it unimportant if i were LA or otherwise as the Q was quite plain and straight forward! I however thought the ‘fight’ to be reasonable tame all things considered! I enjoyed the banter!

Henry, I am not a LA and it was a Q out of curiosity as to how LAs view their work . many folk regard (maybe more so older generations) LA work as NOT garden despite the use of plants.
Perhaps LA designed public spaces are indeed gardens of OUR time with a new moniker?
I read somewhere that LD was more something to be viewed from a distance ra…[Read more] -

Mmmm Lets take a LA design for around an office block downtown…where does the landscape begin and end?

Thanks all for your input..there are many interpretations to be had, some better than others Last but not least..When one visits a public garden one might say “I am going to #### garden.” Does one say if entering a LA area “I am going to #### landscape”?

leslie..fair enough but a lot of LA displays ‘mechanics’ over ‘landscape’..often with outdated ‘idea’s’ from the fine arts arena ..Is fine art a component of LA training?

jordan, i think you might find many trained garden designers use ‘design principles’ before choosing plantlife too.

L.A.s seemed to be called in for even quite small spaces..what makes an LA approach different to a Garden designer?
-
william martin replied to the topic landscape or garden? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
So where does the landscape sit?

Leslie, an excellent answer. The word ‘garden’ according to English writer Tim Richardson has become almost a ‘dirty’ word..or words to that effect.. Is the ‘highline’ a garden or Landscape architecture with embellishments by a plantsman/artist (Oudolf)?

Jon, Mmm as you probably are aware (at least from AU) L.A.s are often considered the last profession qualified to deal with plantlife….Even qualified garden designers are becoming (and often admit) plant weak. Your comment suggests that perhaps L.A.s are more L. Engineers?

Is not exterior designer a more appropriate name for L.A.?
