A.Corry replied to the topic Do I need a CLARB record? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 16 years, 1 month ago
So if I understand this correctly, the CLARB record actually doesn’t benefit the reciprocity if you have a current license? I ask because I’m hoping to be licensed soon (one test left) and my supervisor has a CLARB record for reciprocity reasons, so I was assuming I needed to do that as well in the event we picked up jobs in other states and…[Read more]

Thx Roland for your comment and the link which I haven’t seen before. I agree, there are some generalities to be made for sure.
It’s claimed that the U.S. did a better job with (and were the originators of) preserving land in perpetuity as was done by Roosevelt with the first National Parks etc. Whether they were the first I’m not sure, but…[Read more]

Hopefully I can help you get a decent picture of what’s going on in the Baltimore/DC area for LA’s and architects. I used to work at an architecture firm for a number of years and probably have stronger ties to that portion, but anyway here goes:
*** Of the LAs you know, how many lost their jobs after the economy went bad?
I lost my job in Oct…[Read more] -

I had the same issue to. In acrobat I re-saved it as a previous version, with every previous version you save it as the file size goes down while preserving the quality.

There was an interesting blog entry on this on the Original Green: http://www.originalgreen.org/OG/Blog/Entries/2009/12/31_the_Green_Country_to_the_Green_City.html
It’s hard to really say any of this for sure, beacuse I’ve only been to a few places in Europe and that was a long time ago. But, in general, I think the Europeans do a better job of balancing…[Read more] -

I have kept in contact with several classmates still in school. I have asked them on numerous occasions what the faculty is discussing and what they are doing to help students plan for post graduation. There is very little to no talk on this subject.
When I was graduating in 08 after the housing meltdown before the credit crisis they were dancing…[Read more] -

Eric,
I love shameless self-promotion. Speaking of which, I have just launched a content-heavy blog on landscape and culture called Grounded Design. I update 3-4 times a week.
It contains musings on the form, meaning, and expression of designed landscapes.
Check it out if you have time.
Thanks,
Thomas

I’ve heard that THE actual unemployment figures for Architecture were up over 30%, maybe as high as 50% at the end of 2009. I have no idea what the actual number is for LA. I know the civil firms around here aren’t doing much better, if not entirely worse.
What’s beginning to get a little unnerving for me is that it seems there is little, if any,…[Read more]

I have been professionally practicing since 1995. Since then, I have worked for 4 design build firms, and 4 engineering firms. I left three of these jobs for the other one. The rest, let go for lack of work, and most BEFORE the recession. Keep in mind that this is in the overdeveloped, maxed out (mostly) and unappealing paved over public spaces of…[Read more]

The few LAs in Western Colorado are pretty idle. We could know the state of the profession by the attendance numbers at this year’s ASLA conference in Washington, DC. I have an architect friend who is a principal of a Pacific NW firm. He said his firm had two offices, 27 employees and 7 partners last year. Now they have one office, 5 employes and…[Read more]

* Of the LAs you know, how many lost their jobs after the economy went bad?
I could only throw out a guesstimate of maybe 50% or more. I know a lot of LA’s. Maybe 1 or 2 are working from my graduating class. It seems like it went for months where I’d hear of layoffs by the tens almost weekly just in the Denver/Front Range area. I have no ide how…[Read more]

Thanks Mike. Hey – aren’t we LAs put on this earth to solve unsolveable problems? ha! Seriously – I was walking on the sidewalk next to the highway (35 mph, downtown 25 mph) and a semi with a pup flew past. I thought ‘if he looses a tire, I will be toast!’
The DOT here is trying, but they put marked (striped) UNCONTROLLED pedestrian crossings in…[Read more] -

Thanks for the reference to the Hamptons! I’ll check it out. It kind of sounds like they did what Palm Springs / Indian Wells / Palm Desert did.
This won’t be the ordinance and it will be ‘suggestions’ rather than law, but it will have tons of graphics, historic photos, etc. At least thats the plan. -

Yes. Really pop 1,860! Everyone thinks SD is the great plains, but we have this amazing little mountina town. Here’s the problem – and you and I have discussed this thoroughly – its not exactly crawling with jobs!

Look for ways to safely bring peds through the traffic. Medians to slow the traffic, Mid block crossings, extra pedestrian cross lights, wider sidewalks, bump-outs at the intersections (narrowing the travel lanes to minimum width), etc. You are asking to solve a problem that you may not be able to solve. The highway moves traffic most efficiently…[Read more]
