I don’t understand what the NY Times editorial page has to do with this post. The abstract by Mr. Thayer, dated or not, still brings to mind a lot of issues about “sustainable” landscapes that Landscape Architects struggle with today. We all moved on a little too fast, didn’t we? Can we solve our current environmental/social issues with the…[Read more]

nrschmid,
What we hear from many of our subscribers, and the primary reason we created the site in the first place (besides enjoying traveling and photography), is the time savings of having hundreds of photos that they can quickly browse and are high quality. Time searching various sites in the hopes of finding good, hi res images is a direct…[Read more]

I generally agree with your first paragraph, but then there are opportunities to use work along “fair use” guidelines. I’ll admit it can be a grey area as I’m sure Shepard Fairey can attest to. (For those who don’t know him, he created the iconic Obama “hope” image from an AP Photo.)

Without attacking you personally, it is wrong to assume that everything visible on the web should be free to use anyway you like. I myself upload images to numerous stockphotography sites (istockphoto, fotolia, dreamstime,…) and just because you can remove watermarks doesn’t make it OK to do so and use them for free. It would be of little…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 16 years agoYou’ll get the most out of any prep course (especially Section E) if you work on practice vignettes for at least a couple of weeks prior to the class. Otherwise it can be very discouraging for someone who had been out of school for years and doesn’t work on grading plans on the job.
Also, prep classes are usually full, and there’s usually only…[Read more]

Yes- employed. I fall into the same category as Mary above. It can be busy for a few weeks or over a month and then a sizeable lull follows. I have been optimistic that things were turning around a few times over the past 15 months but it was the old “false summit”, in mountaineering speak. Right now I am encouraged by some positive trends in the news.

Hey Michael. I was kind of in the same boat trying to find internships and I realized that I just needed to start getting creative in my search. It is all about finding an untapped niche and figuring out how you can fit into it. One of the best things for me to use when looking for an internship was the ASLA website and use the “Firm Finder”. Just…[Read more]

I absolutely agree.
Perhaps in the full article he gives his definition of “sustainable,” from from this excerpt we have just so much yatter. And by the way…why can’t humans be a part of “sustainable,” Are we going somewhere? Is pruning or dividing and transplanting un-sustainable? Why is “Exact replication of “natural,” un-peopled analogs “…[Read more]

Good points. Not familiar with the Kimbell, plus I really don’t like Louis Kahn (everybody, in Shatner voice…Kahn!!!!). I detest brutalism. Anyway, I looked at it on Bing, and the building does transition well into the landscape. The landscape is extraordinarily simple and clean, well suited to the building. Very mid-century. Kinda makes you…[Read more]
