Charlotte Area Landscape Architects 16 years, 2 months agoMichael and Jim,
I noticed the update to NCASLA’s website and like the look. How are the two of you involved in the Chapter? I’m currently looking for employment in Charlotte and found it helpful to read some of the reports and get to know some of the firms in the area a bit better. -

Design Implementation 16 years, 2 months agoWe are strictly a design firm. I personally have some construction experience. When I hire, the FIRST thing I ask is about ANY hands-on experience. It’s extremely important in the residential design and PM environment. Although contractors are very helpful to interns during the construction process, I find that the construction mindset makes it…[Read more]

Amy,
No judgement regarding your personal level of tolerance…my remark was a general complaint about the tone of the conversation that was developing. Comments such as “mental masturbation” again prompt me to request we be civil and adult. So he told weak jokes and imparted his personal philosophies (some Christian, some from Confusious…[Read more]

Hi Kelly,
I study at the moment Landscape Architecture at Writtle School of Design near London. The school offers besides the Landscape architecture studies, Landscape management, Land art and Conservation. I also know that Greenwich offers more urban orientated studies. It just depends what you prefer so if you have questions just ask.

Hi Trace.
Why should I put you in your place if some points are valid? I’m center left too, but am open to seeing the will and action to change. I posted it somewhere here, that the recession does something good to the region…unarrested development is…well…arrested. Now that’s there’s a crunch, clients are now looking for more quality to…[Read more]

WOW, that sounds amazing! That type of use of the park isn’t by design, it’s by culture. Not that as a landscape designer I don’t strive to create spaces that foster this type of use, but it’s just not widespread in the American culture. Thanks for the tip. What was the University?

I’m glad to see that New Urbanists are absorbing the sustainable agriculture thing. I’d never heard the term “nourishable place” before you mentioned it. I agree that landscape architects could make some major contributions to the sustainable ag. movement.
It’s hard to respond to this topic when I agree with most of what’s been said. -

LEED in Landscape Architecture 16 years, 2 months agoAnyone have a good detail/case study for using planting islands as small stormwater catchment areas? This is for the northeast, and the parking lot will most likely have standard curbs, but if there’s another idea… Just getting started on the project, but excited about the possibilities. Thanks!

Mr. Flor, I am happy to hear Dubai pays some lip service to going green..But I am fairly left of center – where does ANY of the water come from? What sort of habitats are being displaced for these hideous shore-line high-rises? I have never heard anyone complain about the inapropriateness of developing Dubai beyond it’s capacity..I have only heard…[Read more]

@ Mr. Mouzon, I think we also need to look to invasives and weeds for their nutrients – one of my pet projects is to make a pictionary phamplet of edible weeds, to be distributed to bums (of which we have a lot in california..)

Is anyone aware of any exceptionally designed, well documented, and public stormwater management projects that completely, or largely, utilize native soils? (Firms, web-resources, documents, etc.)
