The Army is another diverse “profession” . What do people at cocktail parties think when someone replies “I’m in the Army”?
Much like landscape architecture, the impression is going to depend on two things. One is the understanding that the observer has of the field and the other is going to depend on how the observed carries himself. Not…[Read more]

Nicely done! It looks like your firm has a lot of sports facilities and parks under their belt.

The company that I talked to isn’t flourishing by any means at the moment, but the principle that I talked to said that the future was looking a little brighter than it had been in the past that is why I said that things here in PHX are starting to look better.

I managed to find a planning job, and although I am not getting my experience requirements right now for the LARE (because I am not working under a licensed LA) I am still getting great experience with regards to the permitting process, not to mention dealing with people under stressful situations. I had to sell myself a little bit at first, as…[Read more]

I picked up an entry level position in October. Stay hopeful, and perseverance is a MUST. I had been searching since the beginning of 09 with a very strong entry level portfolio and resume with a degree from one of the best schools on the west coast.

Well, maybe a few did and most of them are not around anymore to tell us how bad it really was. I’m doing my part, actually putting money INTO my savings account for the first time in over 6 months. I think the tide is shifting, though I doubt we’re looking at a v-shaped recovery, maybe more like a ‘U’…but hopefully not a ‘W’ or worse, an ‘M.’

I dont think you could limit HGTV to the detriment it has on the public perception of landscape design(ers), but design in general.
The public thinks design is fashion du jour- spiky hair, skinny jeans, and lime green. LA is just not that glamorous. We design streets and move dirt around. Sometimes we design intimate spaces which I think tend to…[Read more]

I too took the UGA review session. While it helped with the multiple choice section, I felt the thing that helped me the most on the graphic sections was locking myself in the spare bedroom office for 3-5 hours a day for a couple months, if not more.
That prep didn’t prepare me for one of the more difficult E problems. My experience in the home…[Read more]

“are we currently capable of achieving a clear and accurate cocktail party summation of our job description?”
When I am asked what a landscape architect does, I always answer “we are designers of functional exterior environments”
I remember an interesting story from college. We had a wolpert rep come in and speak to our professional practice…[Read more]

So what I’m hearing is this is not necessarily a prefabricated request… Well this is a start! The shelter is for a commercial space that would need to cover at least a 50×150 SF space in order to not look diminutive. I’m not married to the idea of metal, but was in search of a material that was quite impervious; although the idea of a greenroof…[Read more]

Phil perhaps you are only interested in decorating gardens, but for many of us we are far more involved in design services that do require law, have a significant impact of health and even protect and provide safety and security. Our profession is very diverse and yes DOES require and should require competency in the core areas of health, safety…[Read more]

Depending on your budget and location, try sketching/designing your own, checking books/web for ideas. Steel is often fabricated locally, or the nearest city. Try visiting a fab shop owner with your sketches. Not a fence company, but more of a structural steel shop. Often, square tubing or even wide flange beams for posts and framing – it can be…[Read more]

Andrew,
You raise an interesting discuss here and I am glad you have. The threads of recent have been good for raising questions but as one who is proud to use ASLA behind my name, I must say disappointing. The profession of LA is long and rich in history and we have great opportunities in the future. I know the times right now are dreadful, I own…[Read more] -

I see a difference in the status of LA’s, east coast and west coast..In Virginia, Wlm. McDonough is like a little god, and New York, home to the most beautiful designed parks in the world, loves LA;s unqualifiedly.. But I think here in CA., we are more decorators and irrigation specialists, less land forming and site interpretation..
Perhaps…[Read more]

My question is not why others may not respect landscape architects or what we can do to make it more respected by them. My question is to those who are in the profession who now believe that they entered a profession that is not respected. Again, I am NOT one of those.
The question is when did you determine that it is not respected and was there…[Read more]
