Hi Jason,
My university has a semester long (fall) study aboard program in paris that is geared specifically for landscape architecture students which is very unique. you will find a lot of planning or architecture study aboard programs but not a landscape one. From what I heard, the program is excellent and well organized. You get to travel to…[Read more]

Well after having a meeting with our head chair at Rutgers, I am leaning towards the Europe side of studying abroad, although i would love to travel to the New Zealand/Austraila area, and yes John I also have heard nothing but wonderful things about those two countries. But when all said and done going someplace where i can still graduate on time…[Read more]

Andrew, In talking to more and more landscape architects each day who have similar years of experience in AutoCAD or other general CAD programs, the idea of switching is definitely a pain point…though the pain of the expense in maintaining AutoCAD and any other add-ons are causing them to weigh the pain points…to switch or to stay put. Smaller…[Read more]

Ryan,
Take a look at the second link I provided at the start of the discussion. It will take you to the follow-up article. That article goes into more detail on how one of the goat owners handles the issue of transportation and fuel. It’s worth a read. -

I’m something of a Colorado anomaly in that I don’t ski – it’s the hiking and 14ers for me. 🙂 But yes, it poses a particular challenge sometimes.

COMPETITIONS – ongoing 16 years, 6 months agoThe Land Art Generator Initiative Dubai is the artworld’s responsible answer to the question: “What comes after oil?”
The designs should be considered first and foremost as Land Art Installations. The considerations for energy generation should come in a close second. What this means is that the installations are art first, power plants sec…[Read more] -

Chris-
I just read your post and sympathize with the notion of living elsewhere plying your trade vs. living where you want. For me, I can’t live without skiing. It keeps me sane. Although I’ve seen signs of life crop up across other regions, and heard more experienced people suggest moving around a lot, I just can’t justify living in a place…[Read more]

I personally like any idea that takes it into a more natural rhythm of things. But the article does ask a good question, is it actually saving any more fossil fuel energy by shipping in goats? Because it is pointless if these goats are being shipped hundreds of miles away to clear a few acres. The positive is that it completely rids the landscape…[Read more]

Hey Jason,
Are you looking for something domestic, in Europe, or something more exotic?
During our study abroad at MSU we went all over Europe. Portugal was a place I would have definitely wanted to spend more time. It is cheaper than the rest of Europe, has a rich and historic culture and a great appreciation for L.A. There are many good…[Read more] -

Well, I can only give you advice on places I have travelled to. One of the places I would look into is the New Zealand/Australia area. It’s very far but it’s definitely worth it. It would require looking into what studies are available but NZ is a wonderful country with a HUGE appeciation for the natural world. A lot of the country is set aside as…[Read more]

As you look down the line of Autodesk huge list of products, features for landscape architects dont seem to be a consideration. LandFX came about ($1800 add on) and it does a great job. I feel that if you are using CAD as an LA and dont have LFX, your losing a ton of production time. I would need more than LT for CAD which pushes the $ up a bit.…[Read more]

Quick thanks to Jonathan for the quickstart pdf and the responses from guys at Nemetchek. I was given some good encouragement by some of their guys as to others in their client base that has gone thru similar growing pains, as well as some help thru some of the intermediate level issues I was facing. No doubt they have a great focus on customer service.

Depends on what kinds of data you’re looking for. Places to start would be the websites for the US Geological Survey, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and whatever city/county your site or area of study is in. I’d probably try to work those sources in reverse of the order I listed, going from local to national, but again it depends on what…[Read more]

Thanks guys for your replies. I’m also curious, did these companies help you obtain the proper visas/paperwork…or did they require you already have the necessary paperwork in place PRIOR to interviewing you?
