“There are a lot more pressing issues to get fired up about than worrying whether Alsop will stop LAs or Schwartz will ruin architects.”
Perhaps… although I appreciate the dialog this has created. At least there is still some passion about our profession. I think it is important to check our pulse every now and then to make sure its still there… “)

I am wondering what I can do to contribute for the community that is suffering gravely due to the poor economy.

Some good comments, especially about the issue of public landscapes in LA and the importance of the image in marketing projects. The issue of public land is a big challenge in many western cities, so large-scale, notable public projects are few and far in between. And, western cities present an interesting design challenge because of their…[Read more]

Xerophytic Landscapes 16 years, 8 months agoYa Charles, all the natives around here grow in balls and cubes. You never have to water them and they never grow past the 3′ dia. ball or cube. They even flower in colors that contrast well with the building they are planted next to. I love natives. They’re truely the answer to all your sustainable dreams. You just need more experience, buddy.

I recently had the need for an irrigation design for a project and was referred to the Irrigation Association. They have a cerification program for irrigation designer (CID). Some of the people I contacted were irrigation contractors and some were landscape architects.
I suspect if the design involves tying into a facilities plumbing system that…[Read more]

Here’s the article: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/05/best-buy-selling-electric-bikes-bicycles-west-coast.php
Looks like it’s just electric bikes and scooters, and only on the west coast (probably just California). It’s nice to see this happening, though. It’s pretty hard to find electric bikes and scooters, actually. I’ve only seen them…[Read more] -

Xerophytic Landscapes 16 years, 8 months agoWe are being asked more and more to do less and less irrigation on our projects here in and around Seattle. One might think, “so what, it is always raining in Seattle.” This is not quite true. We have had a very dry summer here but we are only about an inch below average for the year. Many native and non native plants are suffering, and will not…[Read more]

Well in most cases the system is designed by hydrolic engineers and irrigation designers (usually linked with suppliers / contractors) I know sometimes LAs can be involved in discussions as is the case with a new council building in Perth, WA. Check out http://www.newforms.com.au/ and look at the Cottesloe, Peppermint Grove & Mosman Park job,…[Read more]

First, if vehicles have been parking on the Critical Root Zone for years the trees already are compromised. It really doesn’t matter whether you use pavers or not. Check the trees limbs for dieback and try to do a soil probe to determine how compacted the root zone is. How close to the tree will the paving be?

thanks for the clarification, I did mean greywater as in usable wastewater and not the blackwater from sewage. But in these situations, who actually does the irrigation design?

I worked on a Government job in Canberra, Australia where a full grey water recycling system was installed. The grey water system provides water for flushing the toilets and irrigating the landscape. As the Landscape Architects we didn’t have much to do with the design of the system and just designed the planting etc. The practice of grey water…[Read more]

Oh yes… it most certainly DOES go beyond merely figures. Lin-like is a perfect example of that point. Dynamic perspective and Selective complimentary coloring are great tools to have on hand… but once learned and mastered, it is time to take them a step further to an individual level.
When reading the promo for Lin’s workshops, it’s no wonder…[Read more]

I try not to discern ‘good design’ from ‘bad design’ so much as places I’d like to visit or not.
I think there is a lot of ‘good design’ that makes for boring places. It’s a much smaller group of people that truly cares for the quality of design of a space than those who care for the more readily accessible qualities such as physical comfort,…[Read more]

Still, it doesn’t discount the fact that perhaps thousands of young and old architects and landscape architects alike will listen to and emulate the mentality exhibited in this video, staged or not.
I’d bet ten to one the folks over at Archinect are ‘discussing’ Martha’s comments and ripping into LA’s.

I feel like I see a lot more Lin graphics in LA than Leggits.
I actually prefer Leggits style over Lins, but agree that both styles are emulated much too closely and frequently in LA. I disagree that hand-drawn graphics are generally recieved better by ‘the people.’ Of course, it’s all relative, but there have been times in my limited experience…[Read more]
