Most communities have a Comprehensive Plan that is developed as a big picture of how to shape the community in many ways including physically. That sets the stage for all of the many boards and departments to focus on. Each board and department does their thing, …. each smaller box has to fit in the bigger box. There are a lot of constraints…[Read more]

thank u Scott for your recommendation. Yes I am now working for an experienced company. Not the best company in design in my opinion but still there’re things that I can learned from. Heard some companies which are good in design are tough towards their employees i.e. working for long hrs etc. Can’t have everything in one place I supposed.

I think we might need to talk to architects about widening doorways so that some landscape architects can fit their heads through them. There is 50″ of rain. You can design drainage all you want, but even the rivers can’t drain fast enough. You can’t drain to a place that is already filled with water that is higher than what you are draining.

Thanks Jamie-
Yes, i tried that, and found the tome you linked above. Have you used this? i was reluctant to invest in something that may or may not be the appropriate product!
Seems strange that they would reference a manual specifically by title that doesn’t seem to exist, right? -

Well, they will require irrigation but they also must be large enough to allow sufficient root growth to support vines as large as you want.

Thanks Rob. Maintenance is not a problem.
I was worried about the moisture issue as well since the roots are on the roof.
Maybe it’s best to have the vines in the ground and grow up the wall to the pergola, though i’d rather keep the walls bare.
If there is irrigation built into the planters that are integrated with the wall as pictured, wo…[Read more] -

One more point: your illustration indicates a rather small planter for this vine of which much is expected. The limited soil will both limit the vine and ry out very quickly

Jamie makes excellent points.
I would add that vines can require a lot of maintenance to keep them looking good and prevent them from consuming the Universe. Are the clients prepared for that? -

I think you should speak with the client; vines with flowers or seasonal leaf drop necessarily create a mess that needs cleaning up. Would they be fine with this? Flowers are lovely, of course, so many people are fine with cleaning up after flowers. Or maybe they have pollen allergies, so no flowers are the way to go.
Anyway, Bougainvillea are…[Read more] -

I’m open to anything really. My main concern is that it would flourish and grow enough to filter out the sun.

Hi Jamie, thank you for your reply! I actually came across an article on mycoremediation a few weeks ago and I found it really interesting, so I’m glad you are aware of it as well. In terms of constructed wetlands, I did see an article that touted the benefits of creating constructed uplands as a more viable alternative, but there hasn’t been much…[Read more]

Hi Christa, I’m actually working on a student project that’s theoretical (sorry I should have mentioned that), but thank you so much for your reply! It really gave me an insight into how these types of sites are dealt with in the “real world”.
