Well put. Never thought about it but I try to put the house/buildings in most of my renderings for scale and most all done by others I admire have buildings.
This is partly due to the fact that most all landscapes are a part of a much larger project that includes buildings and so you want to make that connections visually. -

I agree. I have found I use my skills I learned in my Site Design class way more than I ever thought I would.

But is thinking/design time from human brains any quicker?. And is there really that much less time involved in computer drafting than competent hand drafting of the bygone era? It has advantages in neatness and ease of revisions and to relay to a dropbox etc. but I hope fees are not being pressured by clients thinking “oh, you guys have computers now.”

Well that’s quite interesting, as a student myself, it would be interesting to see if there are any other lecturers/teachers that feel the same way. Could it partly be a case or new-school, old-school? In your experience would you say 3D’s have been given a fair trial in the landscape industry, or could it be that the old-school is set in its…[Read more]

Well I think its definitely worth the time you put in, its really great work. Thanks for your input, hopefully with enough practice I’ll be that good one day!

One of the worst misconception in design schools is that perspectives are representations of the experience of designed spaces – which it clearly is not. I think we’ve all been taught that the section and plan are far better at conveying the spatial relationships of a design, especially for tighter spaces. Peripheral vision is not covered in a p…[Read more]

This wasn’t the intention of this discussion, it was merely a method for me to try and ascertain why 3D visualization isn’t as widely used in the landscape industry as say in the architecture and design industry. I think this discussion has definitely accomplished what it was set out to do, and I think if anything it has shown that there are many…[Read more]

Perspective sketching is still being taught at some schools, with mixed results. It is most often a very useful tool if you get enough practice to be able to do it well in front of a client quickly.

That’s a really interesting argument. I think a lot of people have come into this discussion with very strong views about 3D, possibly myself included, which is great, but for the most part I made this discussion to try and ascertain as many point of views as possible, not just pick one, that was never the intention here. In all honesty there…[Read more]

This is something that has been discussed briefly earlier on in the discussion. That being said you are definintely right, it often is about the scale of the project that determines whether 3D’s/Walk-throughs are needed, amoungst other reasons of course. I think a companies reputation and past work is a factor too, but I think that is going down a…[Read more]

The question of whether the “landscape industry lacks interest” is not the same as why are not more people using it.
Several people gave their reasons why they do not use it. Each time, some people look at it as an attack on using it or a reason to set someone straight on why they should use it.
It is not a religion. There are many practical…[Read more] -

I think this is true on some level but all this talk really should be about at what scale each time of representation is needed. If it is a larger project you are selling to a community of 1000’s then perhaps a 3d computer fly over can make it seem real. But if you are updating planting in an existing landscape or even a complete new construction…[Read more]

I agree it is not real at all. What really sells is your past work. Your built body of work. Walking a client through a past project that is well maintained sells more jobs than a perspective ever could.
With that said many a client will do the opposite of what you are saying and hold you to the artistic representation as being real and what it…[Read more] -

Luke it takes me about 5 hours to complete a perspective like that. From blank page to signature. I don’t know about talent. I think most all of it can be taught if the person is willing to learn. Granted everyone learns at their own pace and confidence is key.
The best way to ruin a perspective is not having confidence. Beyond that it is…[Read more] -

That is the exact problem I ran into as well, post editing of renders on Photoshop is really time consuming. Your method is exactly what I do too, except I obviously use Revit not Sketch Up. It seems to be a much more efficient method because there is no/little need for post editing and as you stated above “any view is possible and render times…[Read more]

Wow that’s really amazing. I think being able to draw like this also comes down to a degree of natural born talent, I’m not sure how much of this you could teach, am I right in saying that? Regardless this is a perfect example of hand drawn renders that would easily sell a design. Just for interests sake, how long does something like this take…[Read more]

I completely disagree, sorry to say, and here is why. Some clients have absolutely no ability to think in 3D or visualize what a design will look like in their heads, which is problematic and is of course why we do renders and sketches, amongst other reason. The fact that you say “Its not real” is looking at visualization in the wrong way.…[Read more]

I rarely use Sketch Up, not because I have a problem with the program, its a great easy to use program, I’m just more of a Revit fan. I’ve been using it for a few years now and I find it’s just a more finished program with a number of great features. When I said it takes all night to render, I was referring to rendering of videos, still renders…[Read more]

I have found from experience that the time it takes me produce a good rendering by hand is faster than can be done in a computer 3-d program.
The clients we work with really enjoy seeing the work we put into the hand drawings. If I where to present my clients with a 3-d computer rendering chances are they would not put much value into it because…[Read more] - Load More
