A master’s based on a field change may not guarantee a quick jump either and there’s a loss of technical depth if what you really want to do is studio work (depends on the school whether they really emphasize remedial work for field changers or not). I did notice in working as a city planner, that a lot of people had geography backgrounds and a…[Read more]

I really don’t know to be honest. I like the idea of designing landscapes though.

Then it depends on whether you are interested in designing landscapes and master planning, or perhaps a career in botanic gardens.

Get the MLA. It’s a less time in school and gives you a master’s degree. Also, getting a second undergraduate degree cheapens your first undergraduate degree IMHO. I have no idea of your financial situation, but taking on a ton of debt to go after a low paying but still scarce LA design job out of school sounds wrong. But who am I to judge? Good luck!

I think that I became interested in the field when I was a freshman in college. IT was for English assignment that I visted the local botanical garden, and I had a talk with the director of the facilitiy.I was amazed that you could do that for a living.

I have the same question as Jason. What are you considering as large scale and for what purpose. Land Use planning urban planning massing models?
Your answer will directly influence your responses here. -

I have read the study and I found it interesting, especially since last year I made one myself that weighed the cost and benefits of “greening” a wide area in a very mineral neighborhood, filled with huge blocks of flats made of concrete and glass. And i have to agree with you partially. On a small scale, the costs may outway the benefits, but on…[Read more]

And those “intangibles” are, IMO, the real reason to do a green wall. It is a mistake to sell them as sustainable or environmental or “green.” They are.mostly just… pretty

Put me on the side of those who don’t like it. Seems contrived, fussy, the paving pattern doesn’t appear to have logic and the many motifs don’t strongly support the overall concept. If the trees ever get large there may be enough shade so the granite benches aren’t 130 deg. but till then you’ll never see my tush on them. Hope they don’t have…[Read more]

We looked at a lot of plants in the region when we worked out there. The palette is limited, but there’s stuff that works in that climate (hot and somewhat humid).

Weren’t the mounds rebuilt? They looked great the last few times I’ve been out there. Something about the soil mix on foam was the problem as I recall – that Mpls project did have a very low budget.

Then why do the perspectives have so many happy children and dogs, if it if for looking at only? why benches at all?
I do not like this, S.I.Am, I do not like this tortured plan. -

I love a good Jan rant. It is sad to see all the devestation that developers have done to American cities over the past half century. I can only dream of what cities would look like if holistic thinkers like Jan Gehl, Enrique Peñalosa, and Jane Jacobs would have been in charge.

I’d have liked to see more numbers from that study…
But like they said, this is cost based only and does not take into account other benefits (whether these are as important as some would like to believe is another story) : health, comfort, fun, aesthetics… -
