Kim, I will also be attending an MLA program beginning this summer, and have read through this entire thread. While I am surprised and worried by the attitudes and job market descriptions being offered by most posters, it seems to me that you are making the right decision for yourself. Your current career does not bring you personal fulfillment…[Read more]

Not sure why everyone thinks I intend to move to Brazil without a job. I was just hoping to find out if my dad was right about it being a good place to look for jobs.
I’ve only applied to two jobs outside the US, so far. I actually did apply to one in Canada several months ago, but never heard back from them. I also applied to one in China a…[Read more] -

Another sell-out! And you have the nerve to call yourself a landscape architect, huh Craig? Here’s a champagne toast for the recession to last another 10 years! We don’t need anymore suburban sprawl and Hummer H1 vehicles. This recession shook up lots of foundations and made people think twice about over abundance of personal materials. Those who…[Read more]

The worst kind of landscape architect or someone in this field! Damned the future generations and the unhealthy environment coming their way as long as I get mine now, who cares what follows? Its all about me and how much I make. This is actually the same mentality that put the U.S. economy in shambles. Wall Street and the major Banks ring any bells?

Fort McMurray (McMoney) is kinda the population epicenter of the oil sand industry in Alberta right now. They’re estimating that there’s enough oil up there to keep the extraction folks busy for the next 50 years… The place is like a modern-day boom town. Totally unsustainable growth, but that’s a problem for other generations to sort out, r…[Read more]

Hi Jordan. Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. Can you tell me a little more about what the concrete bullets are? I talked to my boss again today and he suggested a concrete edge that is finished a little bit below the gravel. This is for another situation where the client wants dry set flagstone in an area that abuts the turf, but doe…[Read more]

Another edge I always wanted to try is vinyl paver patio edging. If installed deep enough can give you a similar look.

A.It can pose a danger is not maintained. If it is damaged by a lawn mower or is heaved out of the ground. It will cut instead of crushing like plastic edging.
B. Alternatives, I like concrete bullets if installed correctly. Also there is a vinyl edging that looks like the steel. Designed so you do not see the bead on top of the grass. Also…[Read more] -

Hey, another UI alum! I finished there in 2010.
You should send me an email. We’ve got some entry-level CAD Tech positions opening up here in Red Deer, and I believe also in Edmonton. Not sexy work, but a foot in a door. -

I have similar questions and am looking into this: http://www.borderconcepts.com/products/browse/steel-edge-iron-edge. Is it similar to what you have been using that has been producing sharp edges?
I started a thread here because I’m trying to talk my boss into using steel edging on a project, but I’m concerned with safety and so is h…[Read more]

If I had to do it all over again, I would seriously consider saving my money on school and trying to can get an internship or job with an LA firm or Design/Build firm instead (I had one before I started school, and they wanted me to stay…dang!). Thanks so much! Great advice. Do you have any recommendations on suppliers? How thick would you go, 12ga? I’m in the desert southwest, so many people use the rusted steel here.

A lot of people’s aprehension comes from using the really old stuff which never really anchored well and would eventually work loose. They were probably also using residential-grade, which is much, much thinner. If you use a good quality THICK commercial edging that has a proper fastening system, you will be just fine. Aluminum is a good…[Read more]

Thank you! Yes, I agree that the client should be the one to decide based on what they want. Hopefully, I can talk my boss into installing it if the client wants that.

I have been developing contact with Brazil in the last few years and some of my friends have moved there at the same time. Unless you are going there with a job, Brazil’s job market is not as straight forward as you may think.
