I think a good alternative career is any one that allows you to travel. I believe it is important for LAs to travel and see the work of other LAs, noted works or architecture and famous natural landscapes and cities known for aesthetic merit. I’ve been working as a biomedical technician, wihich is bascally electronics repair for medical d…[Read more]

I am not a lawyer, but I do not believe the people you spoke to were correct. I would highly recommend asking someone with the proper legal expertise for that state, possibly your insurance provider.
One thing that might help is the term you’re looking for isn’t ‘statute of limitations’ but rather ‘statute of repose’. Generally it looks like in…[Read more] -

In 2010 I took a home energy efficiency analysis class that included LEED-GA training, though not the LEED-GA class. It was paid for through a grant to a local nonprofit that was administering job training grants. It was part of that whole “Cash for Caulkers” program. I actually got a few interviews to be an energy analyst through it, but as so…[Read more]

Steel does provide those nice clean sharp curves on a budget like nothing else can. I think it has a place in certain applications, and we have used it many times.
Most manufacturers have more options than you may realize. There are a variety of gauges Some offer longer stakes. Some make it wider (6″ vs. 4″). All of which will give it more…[Read more] -

Check with your local unemployment office. Most of the federal funds for professional development are distributed through them for “workforce development.” I recently obtained my Green Roof Professional certification, both the classes and the exam, from a County workforce development grant with federal funds. It was a structured program (they h…[Read more]

Hi there,
An alternative could be cobblestone edging – we have a huge demand for this kind of edging. For a more contemporary look, you could use a cobble with cleaner lines,or perhaps granite cobbles… here’s an example using a 100 x 100mm cobblestone set in concrete… it’s not as clean as steel, but there are some manufacturers with narrower,…[Read more]

this may interest you, Roland..Maybe this is the kind of stuff your dad is reading. Or maybe he is just interested in the ‘landscape’ – sounds like a lot of the beaches have some very nice scenery. Kidding! -
Craig de Necker replied to the topic Quality control of multiple garden landscape installation teams in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years ago
Hi Jordan,
Yep – i think that a performance-based remuneration system could be a solution. The staff don’t understand the cost of having to re-install, re-anything… and of course there are also opportunity costs – ie delaying other work while sorting out problems that should not have been there in the first place.

Hi Mark,
We have had mixed performance from people who previously had their own businesses, but your thinking makes sense – I think it’s a good idea to find out more information as to why the business was not successful… don’t want history to repeat itself… thanks for your insight

I mean to say the UK is more like an apprenticeship, where the US is more like a regular college degree with a lot of “filler”. From what else I remember, the UK is very hort-heavy. The US…not so much.

I had to Google it because I forgot the details. The CMLI is akin to the US’s CLARB. They set the educational standards and govern the licensing in the UK. According to Google, they require secondary professional education (like a Masters) and a 7 year apprenticeship. Wow. We have it easy over here (and it just keeps getting easier). From what I u…[Read more]

Any idea how the education is different?
The only language I know other than English is German, but I’m terrible at it. The grammar always confuses me. I suppose it’s time to practice it and try to learn a few more. -

I’m a bit surprised to learn of this as some of the most original landscape architectural work I’ve seen in print has been in Spain. I like it for the complete absence of site furniture and things pulled from catalogs. Instead they design custom furniture…even light fixtures! They seem to do a lot with low budgets. Perhaps you’ve heard of En…[Read more]

I don’t know if this is still true or not, but a British collegue of mine a number of years ago had stated that American educated LAs are very desireable in the UK because of the slightly different education structure and base education. What’s the equivalent of the Landscape Architect Registration Exam in Europe? Does it differ for each country? I was looking at an ad for a job in London that said “CMLI landscape architects”. Any idea what CMLI is? Is that their equivalent of being a registered landscape architect here?
