Maybe Trimble will take over where @Last left off and, unlike Google has, start fixing some bugs again.

Yes you will have problems. Most people that I know with Environmental Design degrees only. Work in a design/build office as Landscape designers. Not a bad job, but it is a job that you can get with an Associates Degree. If you are spending the time and money you will want a degree that will you allow you to practice one of the specific…[Read more]

Environmental career not in the sense of waste management, pollution, etc, but in terms of landscape design, urban design, technological systems design etc.

I saw a programme at the University of Calgary, and a few in Australia. To me its like Env Des lies somewhere in between La/Arch/Urban planning, so Im wondering if ill have problems defining who I am as a professional. I realise its not offered at many schools.

I have found that you need to be on the same page as your company or you won’t be able to sell. It is hard to represent something that you don’t believe in.
I would figure out what your long term goal is and then figure out how to get there! Some of the great designers can make a go without a crew(subbing it all out), but you need to give the…[Read more]

I don’t know for sure, but I think that an Environmental design degree is a generic degree that is going to provide you less opportunity than a Landscape Architecture degree or Arch degree.
At my college they gave the Architects and Landscape Architects a BS in Environmental Design after 4 years(kind of a participation prize for the extra time in…[Read more] -

Brittany,
I worked as an employee in D/B for many years, started my own company about 15-20 years ago. I can’t answer your “should I stay or should I go” question, but I can offer advice if you go……
You could become a consultant and sub out eveything, but you will not have the total control over your work. You will also find your subs an…[Read more] -

My profession walked away from me. My state board outlawed licensure experience to take LARE if the the candidate works for a registered LA in design build–effectively restricting my rights as an employer.
Why would I support an organization that does not accept me as a full member? -

ASLA could benefit greatly if Leslie’s third paragraph was broadcast over the PA system of ASLA each morning. Too many people have lost site of what our profession is in favor of trying to gain something by pretending it is in the lead of whatever the latest trend is.
“designing for people on the land in the broadest sense is our mission”

I hope Brittany is not your real name because your employer or coworker can be looking at your post at this moment and decide to let you go. Be careful when you talk about your current employer (or even previous employers) on social media while using your real name.

I just bought a Galaxy Tab 8.9 running Android 3.2. I’ve taken it out to the field and one of the major problems is that the screen is not viewable under direct sunlight. I’m not sure if all tablets or iPads are the same, but for mine, it is a useless device outside when it’s sunny.
I do however find it useful when I’m indoors and out of the…[Read more]

In my experience it is not necessary unless, required by the state or you are potentially the only LA at your firm that would do work in multiple states. In my office my boss has a record since he is the one that gets the out of state licenses. So for me it would be redundant and another couple hundred dollars a year for no real value.

I’ve had excellent customer service from CLARB on a number of different occasions – from cancelling a redline review I bought before I realized my state doesn’t offer them, dealing with tech issues in getting my council record setup to ADA accomodations for exams. They have communicated very very well with me and my licensing board.

Also market to busy custom home builders. They find that they like an independent design because they can use it to project manage landscape contractors. Try to get them to let you work directly for their clients. Homeowners are better payers, but the builders will get you referals if they are able to benefit by managing the project.

To address the problem encountered by Ben, it’s best to send out a heads up to whomever is receiving verification letters (the first time one of my employers never recognized it); it’s unfortunate that you can’t download a form to have mailed in – maybe something CLARB ought to change.
