Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic LOOKING FOR INTERNSHIP in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 14 years ago
There are a lot of people with BLAs, BSLAs, amd MLAs trying to get internships and can not. Some of them are willing to work for free and can’t find any opportunities. I’ll leave it up to your judgement if you think you have a better shot at an internship with an LA than they do or not.

Express your approval or disapproval the old fashioned way – by choosing to be a member or not.

So apparently when the ‘leaders’ of the ASLA stick their heads in the sand, all you see are a bunch of asses. You have got to be freakin kidding me. I always knew ASLA was a self congratulatory organization but I had no idea they were outright frauds. ASLA is ridiculous and this joker of a ‘president’ has only proved it even further. Pros: It can be used like you describe. Plus there are several other things you can do with it. There’s a google earth app, a notes app, some GIS apps. The AutoCAD ws app lets you access files away from the office. The camera is a plus. Several sketching and drafting apps let you use a photo as a background, which means you could take a picture,…[Read more]

Les,
I certainly appreciate the use of landscape in umique and multiple ways as you mention, but how does one educate the user about the porpose of the landscape? (I once saw a couple rabbits feet and some fur in a parking area; with a very satisfied looking Great Horned Owl perched in the adjacent London Plane.) I’ve generally found, along with…[Read more] -

I am, in fact being called on to deal with an existing parking lot; I’m afraid that I will find “buckets” in compacted soils where plants are “installed”… While a monoculture is not highly desireable, the use of proven plants has a place. Do you see any push back from using Tuckaroo ALOT??

Jeffrey,
Thank you for your response with regard to goat trails and nature paths. While shade is an important element to any large paved area, I’m more interested in the ground surface in this case. I have also leaned toward ornamental grasses and barriers. If established, they seem to work well.

I’ve already reviewed Georgia’s requirements via the SOS website, which is what prompted my question. Thanks for the reply, though.

Every form of communication tells two distinctly different things about you: what you can do, and who you are. An employer wants to know about both, usually in that order. Email tells much about the first and very little about the second. An interview is at the other end of the continuum. In between are mail and phone conversations.

I know a RLS who got a Master’s in LA from Harvard GSD, but that really does not matter.
Land Surveyors are required to know more than just measuring land and drawing plans. The biggest void that an RLA would need to fill is in the legal end of things especially to do with land ownership and title.
I’ve worked twelve years in small c…[Read more] -

I haven’t used them yet, because I have not done parking lots in a while, but there is this new infrastructure device called Silva Cell (I believe I saw an ad on Land8Lounge). It is a structural void space that goes below the asphalt and base so that the tree has more space to grow than the 4×4 planter island that scatters the parking…[Read more]

I initially became interested in LA through taking a critical view of the environment in which I found myself when I was growing up. I looked at the strip malls, car dealerships, apartment complexes and so forth and decided that most of them were pretty ugly. It all combined to create an atmosphere that was patently depressing. Then I found tha…[Read more]

Cut ’em down. Chip ’em. Dry ’em. Rewet the chips. Place in smoker. Add pork butt or beef brisket and no less than 8 hours. Enjoy.
I’m east coast, though. We use oak. -

Mesquites are often used in the Las Vegas valley. Can you grow those in Reno? Texas Honey Mesquite seems to be the most pupular. They grow quickly with irrigation, but the problem is they are subject to being blown over. I heard a saying among landscapers there that they need to be kept pruned so that you can throw a football through the…[Read more]

There certainly are problems around the world with this. No-one really wants to provide a green space for any reason save making it more conducive to dropping your wallet and leaving as soon as possible. It only needs a little thought, however, to actually attract shoppers with planting, even if they do not start out that way.
What I mean is a m…[Read more] -

will you not be interested in desert living and the drylands competition mentioned on here? I realise insulation is the other way around, you want to keep heat in but, like everyone, you want cheap power. Surely there are many correlations. You may, however, want to think about reducing snow to water before the spring melt and, in a virgin ar…[Read more]

Check out cgtrees.com
The website has a large selection and the quality seems to be better than any other site I have come across. Also, the plant images are common to the American urban landscape unlike what you might find at doschdesign and other European based websites. The images are extremely affordable and I use them almost everyday at my…[Read more] -
