Can you use the AIA backed credits from the article in Architectural Record? I’m sure many libraries carry it and I believe they have articles each month (articles have quizzes in the back).

The Japanese education system post-WWII (semi-imposed by the US military occupation) encourages to follow and not lead, thereby discouraging “independent” thinkers that think outside-the-box (ie prevent another rise of expansionist policy). They like to have a plan A and not challenge it.
I think both sides as posed by this article has…[Read more]

I, too, agree. Why should my genius be diluted by other’s lethargy and ineptitude? I always hated group projects in skool, as some person or people (usually me) carried the group, and they share the grade. Or even worse, they can bring you down! Also, you likely are left doing an inordinate share of the responsibilities. If you have a good team t…[Read more]

Trace One…thanks so much for posting this article. This article put into words the way I have always felt. I don’t know how many times I have sat in meetings looking at a project and having to listen to someone talk just to hear themselves talk…”well what if we do this or what if we do this or what if we do this….blah blah blah?” The…[Read more]

For section D, are there any new materials. I’ve taken the class 5 years ago. I really need to pass before the new change.Anyone, want to have study group strictly for D? I’m in Orange County, CA or we can just do emailing to share study materials. Thanks

i completely agree with the article. groupthink is a bad direction. it doesn’t work and you can see that constructed into our built environment. appearing more and more. i appreciated the differentiation between groupthink and group work. but think that the latter cannot work until we begin to honor solitude & intelligence. integrity will…[Read more]

Hey Keith,
Just stumbled across your msg….have you tried McGraw Hill’s online education site? You can take the online
courses and once you pass, print the certificate that shows you pass and the credit hour. It’s great! -

Hi Carl,
Thanks for your reply. I have only Sections B and D left and I am looking for a study group. I am interested to meet up and have another sounding board. If you are interested that would be great! I live in Carlsbad.
Please email me at naricanari@yahoo.com and we can talk about scheduling a day and time you are available.
Thanks!

Hi Nel,
I’ll be in SD on and off for the next few weeks. I live in La Jolla, and will be studying for A+B.
I believe the LARE is changing after this testing period and section D will be incorporated into the new graphic sections. I think, unless you have completed the graphic sections already, it might not be in your best interest to study for s…[Read more] -

Actually, I did those relatively new to the profession a bit of a service by pointing out to them one far more affordable and easily accessible alternative than the costly online option your self-promoting here.
I have no qualms with the value and utility of your online course, I just find the asking price, far too steep and so would most…[Read more] -

I’d recommend using ‘landscape designer’ (I’ve seen this most often) or maybe even ‘recent landscape architect graduate’. If you use ‘landscape architect in-training’ check w/your state registration board to make sure that there aren’t any ‘conflicts’.
As far as looking for jobs: the ones that generally apply to college grads would be ‘…[Read more] -

You need to really get a clue here. It appears your somewhat disconnected from the true reality of the marketplace. Let me be specific, in case you can’t be.
There is massive unemployment in the design professions and thast has been pervasive going on nearly three years. You are offering a “sure-fire” or “near-fire” portfolio and…[Read more] -

One of my recent students listed their current job as “landscape architect in training” to avoid this snafu.
I would suggest visiting the ASLA job board to see how others with your level of experience are handling it. Here are some samples of student portfolio websites that include resumes for other ideas on wording and layout: Samples r…[Read more] -

BD+C is fine, as it has a landscape component with the WE credits and many of the concepts of ND are already there. If you want to get ahead and go into an LA firm, familiarize yourself with the Sustainable Sites Initiative, which is like LEED for site work. There is no exam, and the download is free.
I have BD+C and don’t feel the need to go b…[Read more] -

Golf is not and has not been for the filthy rich for many decades. There are far more municipal courses for the general public at very low prices that are affordable for everyone. They are open space amenities not only handling recreational needs, but also managing stormwater for developments, providing wildlife habitat corridors and helping to…[Read more]
