Good point with the sole proprieters ot being part of the statistics. Those people also do not show up in the government’s unemployment numbers.
With regards to staff on websites, many firms do not house the site or maintain it on site, so it costs money to change things. Usually, only the core management staff is listed to keep the changes to…[Read more] -

I started very early on in high school I always had a green thumb and was interested in designing something. My father was an electro-mechanical engineer…so it is in the blood. I later found an interest in Architecture as well. I also explored various tyoes of engineering including electrical and software, but didn’t like either.I had to do an…[Read more]

Being a grunt is much more fulfilling when you are doing your own grunt work. Matter of fact, I have a couple jobs lined up in the fall where I will be fixing the problems created by a designer standing and pointing their finger. One of them, lets just say $100 worth of weedblock fabric on a $10k rock garden could have saved their rep…[Read more]

Very cool. I look forward to reading it. In the meantime, we are still using our Excel spreadsheets (since 17 years) and might just find someone who can code our way into a more sophisticated time-tracking system….

I like Pruned…the author, Alexander Trevi, is a gifted writer and tireless researcher.

This one’s good for green design stuff, though often hyperbolic fantasy architecture:

nrschmid,
I read your Cyburbia post and I see your point about planning being absorbed by other, related disciplines (CE, arch) in hard times. Is it the same with LA? Will architects and CEs take over LA duties by cash-strapped developers and cities? -

I used to be a landscaper with a bad back. I had very good training in plant composition from older European landscapers growing up. I saw lots of not so mind boggling landscape plans by LAs and noticed that they had clean finger nails, walked upright, and seemed to be making a better living in a better way than I was. … now at least my nails a…[Read more]

Resentment of people who are still in it and liking it is a very negative human condition.

I agree with you, Cara! I’m on your side and can be your personal bodyguard if your in need of ninja protection. These guys are missing your point of view and I question if they read all of the posted comments. That’s our society today, to blame it on the other person.

Craig,
According to latest stats I saw from Dylan Radigan MSNBC show, the figures are dismal for non-college grads. High school grads and those with some college education make up roughly most of the unemployed. You’re just getting by remember? You said it, not me. Unlike a few years ago when business was great. I agree with you that the economy…[Read more] -

I wouldn’t know the first thing about golf courses, as I don’t play golf. I tried. I was so over par that they had to make a new handicap level just for me. I’d also imagine the owners of those things being hard to work with.

My high school drafting class got me started on the road to architecture. I spent 1 year in architecture school and decided not for me, and that I wanted to design golf courses. Spent the next 4 years at Michigan State, realizing that I loved landscape architecture but that golf course design wasn’t a very…desirable path to trudge down.
