Hi,
This is something I am looking to write my dissertation on. I have only just started researching the topic but I have seen a few examples that could be relevant.
I saw the project in Topos too which really sparked my interest. It’s called ‘greeting to the sun’ and is in Zadar, Croatia. …[Read more] -

I’ve used CorelDraw for about 2 years. I never really saw it as an inferior production to illustrator, I almost prefer it.

As someone who started the process about a year ago, I question the one year transition. Thats only 2 possible exam dates.
I guess I better take D this fall no matter what, so I don’t have to retake previously passed exams.

Here’s my three cents on hand vs. computer illustrations. It is my observation that there are a few reasons why we are drawn to hand sketches versus computer graphics. For one, a good hand drawn perspective represents the ‘field of view’ that your eye sees normally. A computer perspective has finite fields of view. They restrict the view…[Read more]

Are you going to be doing design/build with your own company doing the installations? If not, I think that you probably want errors & omissions insurance rather than liability insurance.
My agent gave me “Victor Schinnerer (sp) Insurance Company” application forms for E&O. -

I am anything but a graphic guru, but one thing that I have come to believe is the possibilty that the more impressive the computer graphic is, the more people separate the design from the designer. They seem to think that the computer did it and the designer is just operating it. The last thing that I want is to have clients disconnect me from…[Read more]

I think its in part due to the fact that as programs get better, people find themselves falling into the “uncanny valley”, where things looks ALMOST photorealistic, but just enough not real to REALLY throw people off. That means to get a good looking photorealistic rendering more work has to be done on the front end with good materials, and with…[Read more]

yep, thanks. i took a 1-day course with mike lin years ago, helped me out quite a bit, btw.
also… architectural drawing and rendering is sort of an idiom much like 2d drafting is an idiom. it has its own conventions and symbols that are easily understood by both professionals and clients. it’s a commonly understood language if you will.

As nice an idea as that sounds, I don’t think it’s feasible in the modern market driven design world. Computers are all about editability and repurposing content from previous works. That is not as easy (cost effective) with analog media.

I think it is kind of ironic how “sketchy”, flat, and unrealistic the recent style of renderings are, especially when using the computer. When I started using the computer all those many years ago, the goal was to get it as REALISTIC and ACCURATE as possible, (you know, photorealistic?) beyond what was capable with hand drawings. I’m not seeing th…[Read more]

Thanks for posting this. I had heard rumors, but nothing concrete.
Very interesting; hopefully the new format makes the exam more accessible, but no less rigorous. -

I think that these days, everybody’s digital graphics look exactly the same. They all have the cutout trees, desaturated people and so forth. I think sketches really convey more emotion and add a personal style to a rendering. Let’s face it, by now everybody knows sketchup and photoshop to the point where renderings are boring. It’s time to go…[Read more]

Bodyscaping. I think you’re onto something!
Doesn’t all good humor have shades of truth…and I especially enjoy unique perspectives that
cause me to laugh and think simultaneously. ;^) When I got up this morning I had no idea that
I’d be chuckling to myself about cowlicks all day. See what you’ve done!

I was only partially kidding… 🙂
I might just have to try and create a “brush” in P-Shop from those baby heads… at the right scale in shades of brown, gold and green it would be pretty groovy, especially for a nice shaggy fescue. -

alright, one more comment. what others have said about landscape architects not being illustrators is absolutely correct. if you’re a full-time illustrator, you have a lot more time to practice, and refine your style. most landscape architects, if they work with graphics and illustrations at all, only do it part time, so in practical terms they…[Read more]

i’ve probably already said too much but i’ll add another two cents in after reading some of the other responses.
i would concur that, as far as coming up with new styles – if you come up with something that sells to clients that’s all the justification you need, really. i think in academia professors might be a tad too conservative, with the…[Read more] -

i agree that we need to put more time into figures and maybe some more style but we also mostly designers and they are not meant to be illustrative…Also Jim Leggitt uses alot of traced figures for more illustrations…but it just depends on who is drawing them…It depends on media, expression, style, and so many other things…maybe you could…[Read more]

Agree with Dave, as I often do. I have my computer plan graphics to the point where they are far more expressive than hand rendered plan graphics that I personally can produce, as I have begun to achieve photo-realism. Markers don’t really look that great for the most part and colored pencils, while awesome, cannot be changed, edited. I have an…[Read more]
