The “elective” was the .1% not all of us can afford to go to grad school, and mildy expected to learn somethings like graphics while an undergrad.. i guess thats what i get for expecting something.

I like Pei and Halprin, but besides that well said. The client is your benefactor. Never loss your creativity but sometimes you can’t always get what you want, you can try sometimes and you might find you get what you need.
I always have thought that if I can’t graphically convey my idea to the client in a way that can’t convince him, I am e…[Read more] -

A landscape architects are a sub set of landscape designers. All landscape architects are landscape designers. Not all landscape designers are landscape architects.

I also dislike font that does not fit its context. And I have used Comic Sans on a project board before… My team was presenting to an elementary class and we thought it would be appropriate and fun. I usually use standard default fonts because they read the best and there is a reason why they are wildly used. All the large offices I have been to…[Read more]

Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Does client input really limit the vision? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 11 months ago
Well, there is no right answer to this in my opinion. Some people hire a designer (architect, LA, clothing, whatever,..) to get a “brand” or a “name”. Some hire facilitators who will get them to understand their own needs and work with them and take on their aesthetic values. Those are the extremes, but there is always another point between two…[Read more]

Okay, yes i agree with you said, but will you settle with graphic communicator? I was not aware of the LA vs. LD dichotomy. At my university there is a landscape design a landscape architecture program, and they are not the same.

I sell design with my mouth.
I design with my mind.
I put it on paper for landscapers to know where things go – not sure if many of the eyes that see the plan after the plants are ordered can even read.
Nope, I’m not too worried about my Leroy-like L80 and S80 simplex text one bit. Nor would I get freaked out if it came out as papyrus or so…[Read more] -

try this, ignore the client and see how long you’re in business…..that’l show em.
I go behind other LAs all the time because they didn’t do what the client wanted….
You can give the client what they want with style and finess that’s why they hire you. they
do know that you can help them otherwise they’d do the design themselves….most never…[Read more] -

but how can you not say all design is not graphic design.
Because it isn’t. -

I think lily said it perfectly. Most normal people (dare i say non graphic people) dont know what they can have. They come in with some generic photo pulled out of garden design magazine and want that, yet they dont realize the amazing potential lurking in the designers head. Just because you are doing something better doesnt mean you leave t…[Read more]

“don’t do what the customer wants; do something better.”
I think you could say that this means that you expound upon what the client wants. I don’t like the idea of creating a design in “my image”…haha. I think a good designer should be able to incorporate what the client wants while creating a vision that they can get behind. Could I do this?…[Read more] -

I only use one font! I dont stress out about it, i dont waste $100 an hour, I’m not sure about what you learned at Idaho, but how can you not say all design is not graphic design. i believe the book for landscape architect to use when making construction docs is called the “graphic standards for landscape architects..” i could be wrong miss…[Read more]

Just because james cameron does it does not mean landscape architects should use it. I liked titanic, but im not building a boat, or drawing Rose.

I just graduated, and i am not about to snub the very institution that gave me a degree (cum laude i must add) but there is a few places to add it. I mean even just one graphic design class is more than needed.
To your other comment, I am not here to go toe to toe with someone. I was using Dirr as an example that i figured everyone woul…[Read more] -

Thank you for your concern.
I didn’t say I don’t LIKE graphic design I said I don’t believe all design is graphic design.
Like someone mentioned on here previously a good designer doesn’t even need a computer to get their ideas across. I believe it was Olmsted’s son that sketched out the lay-out for the University of Idaho’s grounds on a…[Read more] -
