It is not a bad idea with a weekly column to repeat yourself from time to time. You are kind of a calender to people. You can remind them when to perform certain tasks in their gardens when dealing with certain plants, remind them the proper time to prune, or plant, or cut down for regeneration. Then you can add a few little facts here and there.…[Read more]

I am aware of that, but I think that the greater point that Melinda is making is that much of the work that is done by landscape contractors can impact these issues to some degree and that until any work crosses the threshold of needing a building permit in residential settings, there is no one monitoring potential impacts on health, safety, and…[Read more]

There is no specific license for landscape contractors in Massachusetts. You are correct, however, accessible egress steps (for instance) must be installed by a mason who is a licensed Construction Supervisor in the Commonwealth. In short, any construction that impacts “health, safety and welfare” must be performed by a licensed (in one form or…[Read more]

My writings happen only on trace paper, of no language other than scrambled and frenetic thought for whatever design problem I am currently tasked with. After graduate school, I needed to stop writing about design and actually do it instead, and then perhaps after a couple of years return to writing. I do tend to get on my soapbox from time to t…[Read more]

Hey Jon,
I’ve been writing every week for over 3 years on Home Landscape design, a little bit of urban design as well as green living mostly at the home level. You can check out a few of them here:http://www.standardmedia.co.ke (get to the page and search Hosea Omole).
Yes i feel like everything i write now, i have covered in the past. i r…[Read more] -

I’d be interested in some of your writings… what topics have you already covered? Do they warrant any follow up or have you simply exhausted the issues and do not wish to be redundant?
Sometimes redundancy is required to hammer an issue home. -

Oh, there is no doubt about that. It is too easy to produce something that looks like a good design whether or not it is a good design.
One of the things that I do to combat that is not to rely on graphics as a sales tool. That came naturally to me because I am not strong graphically, but I have since realized that because I focus on explanation…[Read more] -

hosea — I am a landscape/ garden writer too — I frequently run into the problem and find that the best way to break out of a rut to go do something completely different….or tag along with others when they do something completely different….it usually gets me re-inspired.

I think the same can be said with our tools. CAD alllows people to be lazy and take shortcuts and not really know how to design something (especially details). GIS allows all sorts of shortcuts with analysis, and many uses have no idea how to interpret the results of the quiries they run, or even how to check their accuracy. 3D allows some to hide…[Read more]

The biggest change that I have seen over time is the degradation of knowledge and skills as equipment and speed replaced it. As equipment gained speed it reduced pricing. That set pricing that more skilled work, whether construction or maintenance, can’t compete with. Some consumers may want it, but they expect to get it for “the going rate”. No…[Read more]

As someone whofrequently has contractors swearing at him because of the design and attention to detail, I would agree with the premise, just not on all the details. Around here, things are a bit different.
3.Most of the workers here are in their 30’s, the bosses (the ones who know what they are doing) are in their 50s. There is generally one…[Read more] -

I did not bring this up as a design build issue. Of course I have found opportunity in it. But I am still a landscape architect concerned with trends and the future of my profession.

I just wondered why you picked this thread to talk about it. Seemed a little out of place if you will, that’s all.
I do appreciate you pointing out that issue. Someone close to me (in a un-related industry) was turned down from numerous headhunting organizations because their age and experience. -
