I see that your Issuu portfolio is 31 pages long. Out of curiosity, have you noticed how far do most viewers look?

Actually, you don’t need a license to be a landscape contractor in Massachusetts.

Does this not spell OPPORTUNITY in a big way? I know excellent design/build people who find a way to get whomever the help that comes along put out a consistent awesome product. Not everyone can people manage, but those who can own it.

Agreed to all mentioned.
Here in Newfoundland, skilled labor and materials for realizing a particularly inspired project is near impossible. The firm I work for is exploring the seemingly obligatory need to build what we design, just to enable design progress on the island. I believe some places/regions can force the hand of construction upon the…[Read more] -

So when you say you have been a Landscape Architect for 28 years, you mean you have been licensed for that long, right? Or was there a “rouge unregistered period” in there?

Mike Lin’s book Drawing and Designing with Confidence does a great job.

I also like a video from Doug Patt’s Youtube series on lettering.

jr,
You may want to look at Mike Lin’s first book.
Also this is kind of interesting: http://aext.net/2009/08/20-awesome-handwriting-fonts-for-a-beautiful-design-you-should-not-miss/ Might give you a starting point.
Point is to develop your own style– I do a lot of hand lettering (am D/B too), and I just evolved a lower/upper case style wh…[Read more] -

I agree!
If you want ASLA to change, then become a Trustee.
Also, @Christopher…
Did you know about ASLA Advocacy effort?
They have a lobbying team that goes to the Capitol Hill to gain support for legislature (i.e. green infrastructure) that would bring more jobs for LAs… it is a long term plan.

I don’t think I have ever worked in a state that does not require contractors to be licensed (DC, CA, and MA)

They used to offer admission just to the marketplace show floor and JobLink (at least to leave resumes, you have to make appointments for interviews for jobs that don’t exist) as a separate admission without being able to attend the education sessions. I think you could attend the keynotes, but don’t quote me on that. I’m a member and I find the s…[Read more]

So many good points have been made so far, I have only a little to add:
When I lived in Texas, I was very involved in my state and local chapters, and I had a great time. Since moving to California, I have not found the same opportunities I enjoyed in Texas, but I was not looking for them, either. I let my ASLA national membership lapse and di…[Read more] -

Is Land8Lounge not an altenative? Think about it. There is a lot of participation and nothing seems to be off limits. I think it is a place where you can share experiences, vent frustration, and get some guidance.
I think the frustration people get from ASLA is disappointment based on expectations. Some of those expectations may come from our…[Read more] -

The headhunter group, “Architectural-Elite”, which operates in Asia, discriminates and will not represent anyone over 50.
This is due to the money. Fresh out of school they take, even managerial position are available, but seasoned professionals who know the game, forgetaboutit! -

It is the standard thesis period. You generally have two semesters to do your thesis in a structured program…the first semester starts with research methods and outlines the project, the second semester is writing the thing. Also, reducing the academic burden by not having a studio to speak of allows the program to be opened up to working pr…[Read more]

This is as I figured. I’m in an MLA program, and have seen those with experience sort of twiddling their thumbs during the required exploratory studios that you mention. That part of the MLA curriculum does seem to be a time waster for those who have been in the professional world for a while. But…I wonder about the quality of research th…[Read more]
