Give me a break! The concept plan will NEVER be built that way. When value engineering and the question “How we pay for it?” comes in to play…many of these grand ole’ ideas will be on the chopping block or phased in 20 year increments. Its a lot like school projects. A complete fantasy. Yeah…like a turf bridge or platform over water is really…[Read more]

I know if conceptual but….where are the trees!?! I’m so tired of shifting and folding ground planes to “create space.” Not everyone wants to walk up slopes of turf….

Three words: Invest in Stocks! I’ve mentioned this already a few months ago and gave some stock advice. Those stocks are up as of today by at least 40%. Unless you own your own business, landscape architects working for someone are NEVER going to be wealthy. Yes, some top management positions do make a good living but only to a select few. Think…[Read more]

Andrew,
Providing a non-competitive service to others who are meeting your potential clients on a daily basis is a very good thing. It is definitely a central component of my business model. -

Craig, as I stated here weeks ago (can’t believe this thread is still going) that its all about ego. Calling yourself a landscape ARCHITECT is more impressive than landscape DESIGNER. When I was a landscape designer several years ago, I introduced myself as an Urban designer…which was actually true and printed on my business card.

Thanks for that Heather. I have seen a diminished capacity in the skilled trades and many construction sites filled with older workers. I fear that your generation of LA’s may have to “dumb down” designs to accommodate a lack of craftsmanship– too many of the good ones are getting older with no young ones to teach.

I just got my license last week. My route to RLA was rather circuitous. My degree is in Architecture. I worked in that profession for 6 years out of grad school. I never got my Architect’s license because I listened to bad advice that I “would never need it, I would always work for someone with a stamp, and it was a huge waste of time and money”.…[Read more]

I don’t think that is true. I’ve been asked to stamp drawings, and have seen my employers do the same.

Did he offend you by “presuming” that you were a member of the ASLA? Jeeze.
Brandm, you deserve a lot of credit for being an adult and trying cool out a dialogue that was deteriorating into something not of the standard of the Land8 or the profession.
Thanks man, I will follow your example.

Brandam,
show me one time I referred to anyone as a kid….however, I am beginning to think it’s an approptiate term…maybe boy or girl….because the level of intellectualism here is obviously not adult in nature….
….and for your info. I am NOT a member of ASLA…so,,,,you can abide by their policies if you like. I found no benefit in being…[Read more] -

1 year left in my MLA program at OHIO state. I will be sure to put LIAT on my business cards and website until I am an RLA.

Classy.
Here we go. Don’t take the high road all of sudden my man and accuse me of not respecting my elders (the first time since I was 7 that I was accused of that–memories!). I can point out several condescending statements you have made, so explain how that inspires respect? Manners are a two way street after all and respect has to be e…[Read more] -
