SketchUp 15 years agoHey Daniel – I have a quick (hopefully) question. I tried to create a shade structure, but I can’t seem to figure out how to control the direction the fabric is taking. On the attached SU file, I would like the fabric to have a downward curve (showing the gravity) and instead I have an upward curve. Is there a quick way of changing the curve……[Read more]

I like the hypothetical project concept alot, it makes sense on a lot of levels, especially when showcasing your design chops. As a working professional, I find that the bread and butter projects are often forgettable when it comes time to compile your portfolio –sure they pay the bills but they very often aren’t really challenging…[Read more]

I got my original LEED AP designation back in ’07. From what I understand, if we want to skip the Green Associates exam, the only route we can take is the BD+C. If you go onto the USGBC website to select a track, I think it will only allow you to select BD+C.

Your profile info says you are a landscape architect. (registered I assume) In the case of a practicing l.a. I would not show any student work….
I wouldn’t want to see anything except built projects that you designed and provided construction administration. This way I can see YOUR work…..Oh, and group like project types regardless of age…[Read more] -

It’s important to think of the portfolio as a sales and marketing piece rather than a professional biography.
If a project (or your ability to present it) isn’t great then leave it out.
Open with something impressive, followed by a couple of less impressive but very good projects, then a great one or two.
I wonder how necessary it is to mass…[Read more] -

I did not men to imply that there was a lot of hiring going on, but wanted to support my earlier point that in general, where real estate values are doing better, our profession is doing better. Washington, DC was the only metro area with increasing real estate values in a recent publication. I’d suggest to anyone planning on moving that (s)he s…[Read more]

Professional work first….always. Your school work is, well, academic. I group mine by project type, so I essentially have chapters. I don’t think I actually have any school work in mine at all, but I have substantial experience with many built works. It is good to keep your portfolio purged. If you are working, unless it is a substantial…[Read more]

Keep in mind the density of firms around DC. I think DC region (particularly Alexandria, VA) has the highest concentration of firms including large & big name firms of anywhere in the nation. Thats one reason why I live here. So, of course, there would be the most numbers of openings for a geographic region, but there is also the highest co…[Read more]

In this market, does anyone need to advertise? I’m a one person part time stealthy operation and people somehow find me to send resumes from time to time. … email resumes.
Geographically, DC looks more active than most metropolitan areas. -

Turning the edges and linework in sketchup will do a lot. I agree you need to use photoshop for vegetation. If you have a detailed sketchup model of a building I highly recommend V-ray. I use it for all my perspectives and export just the building (sometimes paths and other hardscape basic shapes for perspective) as a png image and overlay all my…[Read more]

NRS,
Does it look like there are a lot of opportunities for good paying jobs that might make it an important option for those in school right now? Or do you think that the numbers of people with education in GIS exceeds the amount of good paying positions?

It works really well to visit the counties site and see what is inventoried on site, find plat information, ownership of neighbors, topo, etc. In college I took multiple classes working with GIS and they all focused on creating gis. When in reality it appears that GIS like so many other things we learn is someone elses domain and we are just…[Read more]
